Unashamed: Called to Suffer for the Gospel and Guard the Truth
April 26, 2026 / First Baptist Church of Oak IslandUnashamed: Called to Suffer for the Gospel and Guard the Truth
Main Text: 2 Timothy 1:8–14
Big Idea: If we are going to finish strong, we must not be ashamed of the gospel, we must be willing to suffer for the gospel, and we must guard the treasure of the gospel.
1. The Christian Life Begins and Revolves Around the Gospel
2 Timothy 1:9–10
9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
2. Don’t Be Ashamed of the Gospel
2 Timothy 1:8
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
Mark 8:38
38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
3. Suffer for the Gospel
2 Timothy 1:8, 11–12
11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.
Paul reminds Timothy that gospel faithfulness often brings hardship. Suffering is not always a sign that something has gone wrong; sometimes suffering comes because we are walking in obedience to Christ.
Supporting Scriptures: Philippians 1:29; 2 Timothy 3:12; Matthew 5:11–12
4. Hold On and Guard the Treasure of the Gospel
2 Timothy 1:13–14
13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
The gospel is not ours to edit, soften, or redefine. It is a good deposit entrusted to us.

Unashamed: Called to Suffer for the Gospel and Guard the Truth
Text: 2 Timothy 1:8–14
1. Opening Icebreaker
What is something small that feels like “suffering” to you, even though you know it probably isn’t? Think traffic, bad Wi-Fi, no coffee, the AC going out, or waiting in a long line.
2. Discussion Questions
- What did you notice from 2 Timothy 1:8–14? Was there a phrase, command, or image that stood out to you?
- Paul writes these words from prison to a younger pastor under pressure. How does that setting change the way you hear the command, “Do not be ashamed”?
- The sermon said, “We often believe in a cross for salvation, but not a cross-shaped life for discipleship.” Where do you see that temptation in modern Christianity?
- In verses 9–10, Paul roots everything in the gospel before he calls Timothy to suffer. Why do you think we need to remember what Christ has done before we can endure hardship faithfully?
- The sermon made a distinction between being unashamed and being obnoxious. What does it look like to be bold about Jesus while still speaking “in faith and love”?
- Paul says to “share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.” What kinds of suffering, pressure, or resistance might ordinary Christians face for being faithful today?
- Paul tells Timothy to “guard the good deposit.” What are some ways Christians today may be tempted to edit, soften, ignore, or add to the gospel?
- What’s one thing you’ll do this week to be less ashamed, more faithful under pressure, or more careful with the treasure of the gospel?
3. Going Deeper
The sermon said, “Some suffering is not a sign that you are outside the will of God. Sometimes suffering comes precisely because you are in the will of God.” How can we tell the difference between suffering caused by our own foolishness and suffering that comes from faithfulness to Christ?
4. Prayer Focus
Pray for courage where we have been silent or ashamed of Christ.
Pray for endurance where obedience feels costly, tiring, or lonely.
Pray for faithfulness to guard the gospel, cherish it personally, and pass it on clearly to others.
