GENESIS – Abraham & Sarah Week 5- The God Who Provides
Genesis 22:1–19 (CSB)
1After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered.
2 “Take your son,” he said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.”
3 So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out to go to the place God had told him about.
4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.”
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together.
7 Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.”
And he replied, “Here I am, my son.” Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.
9 When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac[b] and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.
10 Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.
11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He replied, “Here I am.”
12 Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
14 And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said, “It will be provided on the Lord’s mountain.”
15 Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven
16 and said, “By myself I have sworn,” this is the Lord’s declaration: “Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son,
17 I will indeed bless you and make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the city gates of their enemies.
18 And all the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring because you have obeyed my command.”
19 Abraham went back to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham settled in Beer-sheba.
- I want to talk to you this morning
- About what happens
- When God asks you to trust Him before He provides.
- There are moments in life when following God feels clear.
- And then there are moments when it feels costly.
- Moments where obedience doesn’t just require trust
- It requires surrender.
- Because sometimes
- God doesn’t just ask for our time…
- He asks for what we love most.
- Our security.
- Our future.
- Our plans.
- Our Isaac.
- Genesis 22
- Is one of the more difficult passages in Scripture.
- God speaks to Abraham
- The man who waited decades for a son
- And says:
“Take your son…your only son Isaac…whom you love…
and offer him as a burnt offering.”
- And immediately, we feel the tension.
- Why would God ask for this?
- What is He doing?
- And deeper still
- What does this reveal about Him?
- Because this is not just a test of Abraham’s faith.
- This is a revelation of God’s provision.
- And remember
- Moses is writing this to a people
- Who had just been delivered by God
- And were now learning to trust Him in the wilderness.
- They needed to know:
- Can we trust God when we don’t understand what He’s doing?
- Before we go any further,
- I want you to know something about today.
- Today is not just another Sunday.
- Today begins a week
- Where everything in our faith comes into focus.
- This is the week
- Where we remember a Father who gave His Son…
- A Son who carried the weight of our sin…
- And a Savior who walked out of the grave.
- And what we are about to work through in Genesis 22
- Is not just an old story.
- It is setting the stage
- For Good Friday…
- And for Easter Sunday.
- Because on one mountain
- A son was spared.
- But on another mountain
- A Son was not.
- And this week as a church
- We are going to walk through that story together.
- Good Friday at 6:00
- We will gather and remember the sacrifice.
- Easter Sunday at 9:30
- We will celebrate the victory.
- And here’s what I believe
- There are people in your life right now
- Who need to hear this story.
- People who are carrying weight…
- People who are searching for hope…
- People who don’t yet know
- That God has already provided what they need most.
- So as we walk through this today
- Don’t just hear it for you.
- Ask God:
- “Who needs to be in the room with me this week?”
- Let’s walk through this together
- First we see
1. The Test Reveals What We Trust
- Verse 1 tells us this is a test.
- Not because God needs information
- God doesn’t test to harm us
- He tests to reveal and strengthen our faith
- But because faith must be revealed.
- God is not trying to destroy Abraham.
- He is trying to expose what Abraham trusts most.
- And notice how specific God is:
“Your son…your only son…whom you love…”
- God names the very thing that could compete with Him.
- Because anything
- Even a good gift
- Can become a rival to God in our hearts.
- For Abraham, Isaac wasn’t just a son.
- He was the promise.
- He was the future.
- He was the visible evidence that God keeps His word.
- And now God says
“Give him back to Me.”
- This is the tension of faith:
- Do you trust the promise…
- Or the God who made it?
Proverbs 3:5 says,
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…”
- Not part of your heart.
- Not when it’s convenient.
- All of it.
- Even when it costs.
- Which brings us to a second truth
2. Faith Walks Forward Without Full Understanding
- Verse 3 says,
“So Abraham got up early in the morning…”
- We see no delay.
- We see no argument recorded.
- Not even at least a little negotiation.
- Just obedience.
- And for three days…
- He walks toward the mountain.
- And don’t miss this detail in verse 6.
“Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac.”
- Isaac is not just walking up the mountain.
- He is carrying the wood for his own sacrifice.
- Up the hill.
- On his back.
- Under the weight of what is about to happen.
- And Abraham is walking behind him.
- Father and son.
- Walking together.
- Toward sacrifice.
- And Abraham knows something Isaac does not yet fully understand.
- But here’s what we see on this side of the cross
- This moment is pointing forward.
- Because one day…
- Another son would carry wood up a hill.
- Not just the possibility of sacrifice
- But the full weight of it.
John 19:17 says,
“Carrying his own cross, he went out…”
- Isaac carried the wood…
- But he was spared.
- Jesus carried the wood…
- And He was not.
- And the reason matters.
- Because Isaac was only a picture.
- Jesus is the fulfillment.
- And then Isaac speaks:
“Father…where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
- And Abraham responds
- With one of the most powerful statements in Scripture:
“God Himself will provide the lamb.”
- He doesn’t know how.
- He doesn’t know when.
- But he knows who.
- Faith is not having all the answers.
- Faith is trusting God when you don’t.
2 Corinthians 5:7
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
- And now we are about to see this played out in Abraham’s life
- Where…
3. The Moment of Surrender Becomes the Place of Provision
- Now Abraham builds the altar.
- He lays the wood.
- He binds his son.
- And then…he raises the knife.
- This is the moment.
- This is where faith becomes surrender.
- And just as the knife is lifted
- God intervenes.
“Abraham, Abraham!” “Do not lay a hand on the boy…”
- And then Abraham looks up
- And sees a ram caught in the thicket.
- A substitute.
- And Abraham names that place:
“The Lord Will Provide”
- Not “The Lord might provide”
- Not “The Lord sometimes provides”
The Lord WILL provide.
- And here’s the truth:
- God’s provision often comes at the point of surrender. (PAUSE)
- Not before.
- Not instead of.
- But in it.
- This moment is not just about Abraham.
- It’s pointing forward.
- And we already saw it.
- Isaac carrying the wood up the mountain.
- But now we see it clearly.
- Because on that same region
- Mount Moriah
- Another Son would carry wood up a hill.
- But this time
- Not as a picture.
- Not as a possibility.
- But as the fulfillment.
- And on that mountain
- Another Father would bring His Son.
- But this time
- There would be no voice stopping the sacrifice.
Romans 8:32 says,
“He did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for us all…”
- Isaac carried the wood…
- And was spared.
- Jesus carried the cross…
- And was not.
- And the reason is everything.
- Because if Jesus is spared…
- We are not.
- But because Jesus was not spared…
- We can be.
- That is the gospel.
- That is the good news.
- On this mountain,
- God showed us something:
- A substitute would be provided.
- And in Jesus
- That substitute becomes the Savior.
- Isaac was spared.
- Jesus was not.
- So that we could be.
- Which means today
- You don’t earn God’s provision
- You receive it
- By trusting in Jesus.
What Is God Asking You to Trust Him With?
- Let me ask you something.
- Where is your Isaac?
- What are you holding onto
- That God is asking you to trust Him with?
- Because sometimes trusting God
- Looks like releasing what we would rather hold onto
- And believing He is still our provider.
- Is it control?
- Is it your future?
- Is it your finances?
- Is it your reputation?
- Is it your comfort?
At New City, Our Mission Is: To Inspire You To Trust In And Live Like Jesus.
- But trust always comes before living.
- And trust is revealed in surrender.
- Maybe for you today
- Obedience feels costly.
- And for some of you
- Your next step of trust
- Is not just believing
- But being baptized
- And publicly declaring
- That Jesus is your Savior.
- But here’s what Genesis 22 teaches us:
- You can trust the God who provides.
- Because He didn’t just provide a ram.
- He provided His Son.
- Abraham looked up…
- And he saw the provision of God.
- And today—we look up…
- And we see the cross.
- The place where God provided
- Not just a ram…
- But a Savior.
- And this is the week
- Where we remember it.
- Good Friday
- We will gather
- And we will sit in the weight of the sacrifice.
- We will remember
- That Jesus was not spared…
- So that we could be.
- And then Easter Sunday
- We will celebrate
- That the story did not end on a mountain of sacrifice…
- But in an empty tomb.
- And church, listen
- This is not just something we attend.
- This is something we invite people into.
- Because there are people in your life
- Who are still carrying guilt…
- Still carrying shame…
- Still trying to earn what God has already provided.
- And they don’t need a better version of themselves
- They need Jesus.
- And this week
- You may be the bridge
- Between where they are
- And where God is calling them to be.
- And God has positioned you
- In their life
- On purpose.
- So, this week
- Invite the friend.
- Invite the coworker.
- Invite the neighbor.
- Invite the family member.
- Not because we are trying to fill seats
- But because we are called
- To help people who are far from God
- Find and follow Jesus.
- God has provided
- Now let’s make sure people know.
Let’s Pray!
