Small Group Questions

What do you think?

Have a member of the group quickly recap the main points from Sunday’s message. What particular point stood out to you, challenged you, or raised a question for you?(MULTILINE)

The story of your life.

  1. Pastor Kyle shared a story about a friend who showed extra grace in his life. What friend(s) have been evidence of God’s grace in your life? Even better, can you think of a story where this was on display in a unique way?(MULTILINE)
  2. Share about a time (not naming names to preserve anonymity) where a friendship in your life was “below the line” and God was able to bring it back above the line.(MULTILINE)

Digging deeper in God’s Word.

  1. One of the best examples of biblical friendship in the Bible is the story of David and Jonathan. If two ever should have been rivals, it was them. Jonathan should have been the future heir. Instead he relinquished that right to become future David’s top defender and friend. Read 1 Samuel 18:1-5 and respond to the following prompts and questions.
    1. Have a few members of the group recap the main tenets of the passage.(MULTILINE)
    2. What does this passage tell us about God?(MULTILINE)
    3. What does this passage tell us about how to be a good friend?(MULTILINE)
  2. Through the rest of chapter 18, Jonathan’s dad basically vows to kill David. Now read 1 Samuel 19:1-7 and respond to the following prompts and questions.
    1. Have a few members of the group recap the main tenets of the passage.(MULTILINE)
    2. What does this passage tell us about God?(MULTILINE)
    3. What does this passage tell us about how to be a good friend?(MULTILINE)
  3. In 1 Samuel 20:16-17, Jonathan and David made a covenant of friendship together. David honored this even after Jonathan’s death by mourning him, and even by caring for his crippled son. Read the story of Mephibosheth from 2nd Samuel 9:1-13 and respond to the prompts and questions.
    1. Have a few members of the group recap the main tenets of the passage.(MULTILINE)
    2. What does this passage tell us about God?(MULTILINE)
    3. What does this passage tell us about how to be a good friend?(MULTILINE)
    4. In light of this, is there anything you need to do differently?(MULTILINE)
  4. Lastly, read the following verses out loud one at a time and share an insight from each one about being a good friend.
    1. Proverbs 14:29-30.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    2. Proverbs 18:19.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    3. Proverbs 19:11.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)

Personal reflection and application.

  1. Have everyone share one thing that someone else mentioned in this discussion that struck a chord with you.(MULTILINE)
  2. If possible, break up into smaller groups (men with men and women with women) to pray for one another.(MULTILINE)
