Small Group Questions

What do you think?

Re-read the sermon points out loud to refresh our collective memory. What particular point from Sunday’s message stood out to you, challenged you, or got you to think?(MULTILINE)

The story of your life.

On Sunday, Pastor Kyle spoke about banners that we speak over our lives and our spouses (if we’re married) knowingly or unknowingly. Growing up, what was one label you felt like you carried (good or bad)? (Ex: “the responsible one,” “the wild one,” “the quiet one,” “the black sheep,” “the achiever,” etc)(MULTILINE)

Digging deeper in God’s Word.

  1. On Sunday, we saw that God’s banner over us is love and that in Christ we are the Beloved of God. This means we are not defined by shame, our past, or performance. One of the clearest stories where Jesus replaces a false banner with a new identity is His interaction with a woman who was carrying real shame and a complicated relationship history. Read: John 4:4–30, 39–42 and answer the following prompts.
    1. Have a few people recap the verses using their own words. If a member of the group knows the theology a bit, they can unpack it to help everyone understand.(MULTILINE)
    2. What does Jesus do that restores dignity without excusing sin?(MULTILINE)
    3. What does this story tell us about God? The banners we place over ourselves? People and ourselves?(MULTILINE)
  2. The story of the “Prodigal Son” is so familiar that the name is even understood in secular culture. The danger in a story being so familiar is that Christians stop asking the truth of God’s Spirit for them in the story. Read Luke 15:11-32 and respond to the following prompts and questions.
    1. Have a few members of the group recap the story using their own words.(MULTILINE)
    2. How does the prodigal son’s self-perception shift throughout the story.(MULTILINE)
    3. What identity does the older brother seem to be operating out of? In what ways can we stay close to God outwardly but still relate to Him as employees rather than as children?(MULTILINE)
    4. In light of this, is there anything you need to do differently?(MULTILINE)
  3. The following verses reveal the believer’s identity in Christ. Share an insight from each one as to how God sees us rather than the lenses and labels we see and speak over ourselves.
    1. Song of Solomon 2:4.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    2. Ephesians 1:4–5.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    3. 1 John 3:1.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    4. Romans 8:15–16.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    5. 2 Corinthians 5:17.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    6. 1 Peter 2:9–10.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)
    7. Revelation 19:6–9.(MULTILINE REVEAL TINY)

Personal Reflection and Application.

  1. Have everyone share one thing someone else said in this discussion that struck a chord with you.(MULTILINE)
  2. Break up into smaller groups and pray for one another (preferably men with men and women with women).(MULTILINE)
