Not-So-Silent Night
(Luke 1:5-11 NLT) 5 When Herod was king of Judea, there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah. He was a member of the priestly order of Abijah, and his wife, Elizabeth, was also from the priestly line of Aaron. 6 Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God’s eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord’s commandments and regulations. 7 They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old. 8 One day Zechariah was serving God in the Temple, for his order was on duty that week. 9 As was the custom of the priests, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense. 10 While the incense was being burned, a great crowd stood outside, praying. 11 While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar. 12 Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he saw him. 13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John
When you can’t hear God’s voice and you can’t feel His hand. You can trust God’s heart.
1. God your name
(Luke 1:11-13) While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar. 12 Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he saw him. 13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah!
“don’t be afraid (your name)!”
2. God hears
(Luke 1:13) But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John.
(Luke 1:18) Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure this will happen? I’m an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.”
(Luke 1:19) Then the angel said, “I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to bring you this good news!
3. God’s purpose
(Proverbs 19:21) Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.
(Luke 1:36-37) Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
(Galatians 4:4) But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law.
(Luke 1:31-33) “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
(Matthew 1:21) Mary will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
(Luke 2:10-14) “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
