WHAT GOD CAN DO WITH WHAT WE’VE GOT pt.2
Mark 6:30-44
INTRODUCTION:
Mark 6:30-44.
Are you satisfied with Jesus?
Background:
Mark 6:30 (NIV)The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
Mark 6:31-32 (NIV)31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
Mark 6:33 (NIV)33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
TEXT:
Mark 6:34-40 (NIV)34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late.36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.42 They all ate and were satisfied,43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Mark’s big main point – .
NOTICE THREE THINGS FROM THIS MIRACLE:
1. THE OF CHRIST
Mark 6:34 (NIV)34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So, he began teaching them many things.
Mark 6:34c (NIV)So he began teaching them many things.
Compassion that doesn’t lead to is useless.
2. THE OF CHRIST
Mark 6:35 (NIV) By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late.”
Mark 6:39 (NIV) Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
vs. 35 late in the day…
The multiplication didn’t happen in the hands of the disciples. It happens in the hands of Jesus.
Jesus is not just the people; He’s the disciples.
John 15:5 (NIV)Apart from me you can do nothing!
Matthew 6:11 (NKJV) Give us this day our daily bread…
Matthew 6:11 (NIV)Give us today our daily bread.
Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.
3. BE WITH CHRIST
Jesus is proclaiming to be the Messiah in three different ways.
· of life
John 6:35 (NIV)Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
· Good
Psalm 23:1-3a (NIV)The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul…
· of the world
Mark 6:41 (NIV)Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people.
Mark 14:22 (NIV)While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
