HITTING THE MARK WITH JESUS wk. 25

November 2, 2025

FROM MADNESS TO MISSIONAL

Mark 5:1-20

INTRODUCTION:

John 10:10 (NIV)The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

We will see today:

·        People are

·        It takes to free people

James 4:7-10 (NIV)7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

·        There is a tendency to want to instead of sharing the gospel

·        Go and in your world

·        here has a great story to tell

·        As this man began to share his story,

Mark 4:41 (NIV)“Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

TEXT:

Mark 5:1-20 (NIV) They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolishow much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

2. THE

”I met the God man.”

Mark 5:6 (NIV)When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.

Mark 5:7 (NIV)He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”

Mark 5:10-12 (NIV)10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.  11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”

”I became a new man.”

Mark 5:15 (NIV)15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

Romans 8:31-32, 35-39 (NIV) the apostle Paul says this: 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?…  35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Mark 5:16-17 (NIV)16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

4.  THE

”I am now a sent man.”

Mark 5:18 (NIV) 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.

CONCLUSION:

Mark 5:20 (NIV) 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolishow much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
