JOHN STOTT’S BOOK, THE RADICAL DISCIPLE, “Our common way of avoiding radical discipleship is to be selective; choosing those areas in which commitment suits us and staying away from those areas in which it will be costly. But because Jesus is Lord, we have no right to pick and choose the areas in which we will submit to his authority.” (Page 17). “God wants his people to become like Christ, for Christlikeness is the will of God for the people of God.” (Page 32)

TEXT:

Mark 1:14-20 (NIV) 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

FOUR THINGS ABOUT RADICAL DISCIPLES:

1.

They Believe the .

Mark 1:14-15 (NIV) 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Isaiah 40:9 (NIV)You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain.  You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!”

The kingdom is wherever .

Three words that help us understand what ”believe” is.

Here is the gospel definition.”The Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled the law, sacrificially died for our sins, and physically rose from the dead to reconcile His people to a Holy God through repentance of sin and faith in Him.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

What is the gospel?”The Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled the law, sacrificially died for our sins, and physically rose from the dead to reconcile His people to a Holy God through repentance of sin and faith in Him.”

2. THEY REPENT

They Repent .

is a critical aspect of our walk with God.

Psalm 51:5 (NIV) Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

John 16:8 (NIV)When he [Jesus] comes, he will convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment…

Romans 8:13 (NIV)For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

What happens if I sin?

1 John 1:5-10 (NIV)5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

I want to end today with where I started…

JOHN STOTT’S BOOK, THE RADICAL DISCIPLE, “Our common way of avoiding radical discipleship is to be selective; choosing those areas in which commitment suits us and staying away from those areas in which it will be costly. But because Jesus is Lord, we have no right to pick and choose the areas in which we will submit to his authority.” (Page 17). “God wants his people to become like Christ, for Christlikeness is the will of God for the people of God.” (Page 32)
