(slide 1)“The Heavens Declare: The Cosmological Argument & Intelligent Design”

Apologetics session 2:

(slide 2) I. Introduction: Why Origins Matter (5 min) Show an image of a smartphone,  Ask:
“Would anyone say this came about by chance?”

Of course no one would say that. we know that this comes from human intelligence, years of research and development. Yet when we look at our world and the complexity of nature we are told that it all happened at random, by chance, a cosmic rolling of the dice.

Transition: If complexity in human artifacts implies intelligence, what about the universe itself? is there evidence that points to a creator. That’s the topic of this evenings session.

(slide 3) II. The Cosmological Argument (10–12 min)

A. Classical Formulation (Kalam)

Premise 1: Whatever begins to exist has a cause.

Premise 2: The universe began to exist.

Conclusion: Therefore, the universe has a cause.

(Slide 4)

Key Scripture: Genesis 1:1, John 1:1–3, Psalm 19:1

(1) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1 – NLT

(1) In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,and the Word was God. (2)   He existed in the beginning with God. (3)   God created everything through him,and nothing was created except through him.
John 1:1-3 – NLT

(1) The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.
Psalm 19:1 – NLT

(Slide 5) Big Bang theorist claim the universe is 13.8 billion years old. But the Bible only records approximately 6000 years of human history. Modern Discoveries with the James Webb telescope are challenging the Big Band narrative

III. The Fine-Tuning of the Universe (10–12 min)

A. What is Fine-Tuning?-Life could not exist on earth without these precise conditions. Since the 1950′ physicists have discovered that basically the laws governing the known world have made it possible for life to exist pointing to a possible “Fine -Tuner” or “super intellect”

(Slide 7) B. Examples

☀️ 1. Perfect Distance from the Sun — “The Habitable Zone”

  • Earth orbits at just the right distance from the Sun for liquid water to exist on its surface.
  • If Earth were just a little closer → water would evaporate (like on Venus).
  • If Earth were just a little farther → water would freeze solid (like on Mars).
  • 📌 Known as the “Goldilocks Zone” — not too hot, not too cold, just right.
  • 👉 This narrow zone is essential for stable oceans, which regulate temperature and support life.

🌡 2. Stable, Moderate Atmosphere

  • Earth’s atmosphere has just the right thickness and composition:
  • ~78% nitrogen
  • ~21% oxygen
  • Trace greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane, water vapor)
  • If the atmosphere were too thin, the planet couldn’t trap enough heat — like Mars, which is freezing.
If it were too thick, the planet would trap too much heat — like Venus, with surface temps hot enough to melt lead.
  • 👉 Earth’s atmosphere maintains stable temperatures and provides oxygen for life.

🌙 3. The Moon’s Size and Distance

  • Earth’s large moon plays a crucial role:
  • It stabilizes Earth’s axial tilt, preventing extreme wobbles.
  • This gives us stable seasons over long periods.
  • It also drives ocean tides, which help mix nutrients and support marine ecosystems.
  • If the moon were much smaller, Earth’s axis would wobble chaotically, causing massive climate swings and possibly making stable life impossible.
  • 👉 Few planets have such a large moon relative to their size — this is a rare stabilizing feature.

🛡 4. Earth’s Magnetic Field

  • Earth has a strong magnetic field generated by its liquid iron core.
  • This field shields the planet from solar wind and cosmic radiation, which would otherwise strip away the atmosphere and bombard the surface with harmful particles.
  • 📌 Mars, for example, lost most of its atmosphere when its magnetic field weakened.
  • 👉 This “invisible shield” is crucial for long-term habitability.

☁️ 5. Abundance of Liquid Water

  • Earth is 70% covered in water, but not too much:
  • If there were too little water, Earth would be dry and desert-like (Mars).
  • If there were too much, it would be a water world, with no continents — making advanced life difficult.
  • 👉 The balance of land and water supports biodiversity and regulates global temperature.

“The impression of design is overwhelming.” – Paul Davies (non-Christian physicist)

(Slide 8) IV. The Information Argument: DNA and the Language of Life

  • A. DNA as Information
  • DNA contains a 4-letter alphabet (A, T, C, G) encoding instructions for life.
  • Information is not reducible to chemistry; it’s symbolic (like language or code).
  • Bill Gates: “DNA is like a computer program, but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.”

(Slide 9)  B. Origin of Information Problem

  • Natural processes can rearrange existing information but cannot generate specified, complex information from nothing.
  • Information always originates from an intelligent mind (letters, codes, software, etc.).

C. Irreducible Complexity

Some biological systems require multiple interdependent parts to function, making gradual evolutionary explanations insufficient.

(slide 10) V. Connecting the Dots

Cosmological Argument → points to a first cause.

Fine-Tuning → points to intention and design in the cosmos.

DNA Information → points to intelligence in life itself.

Together, they build a powerful cumulative case for a Creator.

(Slide 11)

Romans 1:20 — “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen…”

(Slide 12) VI. Common Objections & Responses

“Who created God?” → The argument is about what began to exist. God didn’t.

“Maybe it’s all chance or multiverse.” → Multiverse doesn’t eliminate fine-tuning; it assumes fine-tuned laws that produce universes.

“Information could arise over time.” → No empirical evidence of new specified information arising without intelligence.
