Rise Up and Build
Nehemiah 2:11–20; 4:6
So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. 12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode. 13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire. 14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King’s Pool, but there was no room for the animal that was under me to pass.15 Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall, and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. 16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.
17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” 18 And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work. 19 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” 20 Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim[a] in Jerusalem.”
Nehemiah 4:6
So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
The Ruins Still Speak
In 1945, much of Europe lay in ruins after World War II. Cities like London, Berlin, and Warsaw were piles of rubble. But the ruins didn’t have the final word. The people rose, planned, and rebuilt.
Nehemiah looks at Jerusalem and says, in effect:
“The rubble doesn’t define us. God’s promises do.”
The same is true for a church, a family, a calling, or a generation.
- Jerusalem’s walls have been broken down for nearly 140 years
- God’s people are safe neither spiritually nor physically
- Nehemiah is not a priest or prophet—he is a cupbearer
- God uses an ordinary man with an extraordinary burden
I. God Builds His Work Through Burdened Hearts
Nehemiah 2:11–13
“I arose in the night… and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down.”
- Nehemiah saw what others had grown accustomed to
- He didn’t just point out the problem, He prayed seeking a solution!
- The vision was birthed through his quiet inspection!
“Never underestimate the power of a burden that comes from God. It will not let you stay comfortable.”
— A.W. Tozer
- What ruins have we normalized?
- What broken things has God allowed you to see so you would build?
II. God Builds Through Clear Vision and Unified Calling
Nehemiah 2:17–18
“Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision… And they said, ‘Let us rise up and build.’”
“Let us rise up and build.”
Notice how easy it would have been for Nehemiah to respond like this:
- “Let them build”
- “Let someone else lead”
- “Let’s wait until it’s easier”
This is collective obedience. He is calling the people to UNIFY and work together!
– The Cathedral Builders
Three men were asked what they were doing while cutting stone:
- One said: “I’m cutting rocks.”
- Another said: “I’m earning a wage.”
- The third said: “I’m building a cathedral for the glory of God.”
Same work.
Different vision.
“Vision leaks. It must be constantly communicated.”
— Andy Stanley
III. God’s Work Always Faces Resistance—but Never Defeat
Nehemiah 4:1–3, 6
“So we built the wall… for the people had a mind to work.”
Forms of Opposition
- Ridicule (4:1–2)
- Discouragement
- Fatigue
- Fear
Opposition is not a sign you’re off course—it’s often confirmation you’re on it.
“The devil does not waste ammunition on empty threats.”
— Charles Spurgeon
The wall was rebuilt not because the enemy was silent, but because the people stayed faithful.
- What opposition are you facing?
IV. God Builds Through Faithful Hands and Focused Hearts
Nehemiah 4:17
“Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other.”
- One hand builds
- One hand battles
You cannot separate:
- Prayer and action
- Faith and work
- Trust and effort
– The Golden Gate Bridge
During early construction, dozens of workers died. Later, they installed a massive safety net—and productivity increased dramatically.
When people know they are protected, they build boldly.
V. God Finishes What His People Faithfully Start
Nehemiah 6:15–16
“So the wall was finished… and they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.”
The miracle wasn’t just the wall—it was the obedience of God’s people.
The GLORY wasn’t in a man. The GLORY was reserved for God. ONLY GOD.
The Gospel Connection
Nehemiah rebuilt walls.
Jesus builds lives.
“I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
— Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
The greatest building project in history wasn’t stone and mortar—it was a cross and an empty tomb.
The Challenge
ONWARD means movement.
Personal Challenge
- What has God called you to build this year?
- A marriage?
- A habit of prayer?
- A ministry?
- A Godly family?
Church Challenge
- Don’t spectate—participate
- Don’t criticize—contribute
- Don’t delay—obey
“The best time to build was years ago. The second-best time is now.”
“And they said, ‘Let us rise up and build.’ So they strengthened their hands for the good work.”
— Nehemiah 2:18
Church, it’s time.
ONWARD.
Rise up… and build.
