The Realm of the Spirit Pt 5 – Angelology

  • Revelation 5:11 (ESV): “Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands…”
    • This reveals a vast angelic assembly worshiping Christ.
  • The word “angel” or “angels” occurs 285 times in the KJV Bible (108 times in the Old Testament and 177 times in the New Testament, across all 66 books).
  • Other biblical titles for supernatural beings include: sons of God (Job 1:6), saints/holy ones (Daniel 8:13), hosts/sabaoth (Psalm 148:2), seraphim (Isaiah 6:2), cherubim (Genesis 3:24), and ministering spirits (Hebrews 1:14).
  • God uses angels, cherubim, seraphim, elders, archangels, and humans to accomplish His will (Psalm 103:20–21; Daniel 10:12–13; Revelation 5:8–14)—not because He lacks any ability, but because His nature is relational, marked by unity, cooperation, and free will.
  • God acts in relational partnership (Genesis 1:26; John 17:21–24), mirroring the Trinity—three co-eternal, co-equal Persons eternally loving and unified before creation.
  • Key character traits—relationship, love, unity, agreement, and free will—predate all created beings and define God’s character (John 17:24; 1 John 4:8; Deuteronomy 6:4).

The Creator of All Supernatural Beings

  • Psalm 148:2,5 (ESV): “Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! … For he commanded and they were created.” All supernatural beings are created by God and not co-eternal with Him.
  • Only God is uncreated; the heavenly hosts had a definite beginning (Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:16).

Witnesses to Creation

  • Job 38:4–7 (ESV): “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? … when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” Supernatural beings—called “morning stars” and “sons of God”—witnessed and rejoiced at creation.
  • Other biblical names include sons of God (Genesis 6:2), watchers (Daniel 4:13), heavenly hosts (Luke 2:13), cherubim (Ezekiel 10:1), seraphim (Isaiah 6:2), and angels (Hebrews 1:14).
  • The term “angel” means “messenger” (Greek: angelos), but this role is only part of their much broader spiritual function (Hebrews 1:14; Daniel 9:21).

The Personal Nature of Supernatural Beings

  • Angels possess intellect, emotion, and will, but are not human; people do not become angels, and angels do not become humans (Hebrews 1:14; Luke 24:39).

Intellect

  • Ezekiel 28:12 (ESV): “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty”—initial description of Lucifer’s wisdom.
  • Matthew 28:5 (ESV): “But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.’” Demonstrates angelic awareness and insight.
  • Daniel 11:1–2 (ESV): “And as for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him… And now I will show you the truth.” Angels explain God’s plans, showing intelligence.
  • Matthew 24:36 (ESV): “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” Angels are not omniscient.
  • 1 Peter 1:12 (ESV): “…things into which angels long to look.” Angels are curious about God’s work in salvation.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:8 (ESV): “None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” Evil supernatural beings lacked foresight about God’s redemptive plan.

Emotion

  • Luke 15:10 (ESV): “Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Angels rejoice.
  • Job 38:7 (ESV): “…when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” Angels express joy.
  • James 2:19 (ESV): “Evil powers believe—and shudder!” demonstrating negative emotion.

Will

  • Psalm 103:20–21 (ESV): “Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word…you his ministers, who do his will.”
  • 1 Peter 3:22 (ESV): “…Jesus Christ…who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.” Angels exercise free will and are subject to Christ.

The Spiritual Nature of Angels

  • Angels are spirits—not flesh and blood (Hebrews 1:14; Luke 24:39).
  • 1 Corinthians 15:44 (ESV): “It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.” Angels have spiritual bodies.
  • Angels are spatially limited; one angel can only be present in one location (Daniel 10:13; Luke 1:26).
  • Angels are incredibly powerful (Psalm 103:20; 2 Kings 19:35; Revelation 7:1).
    • 2 Kings 19:35 (ESV): “…the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians.”
    • Revelation 7:1 (ESV): “…I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds.”
  • Psalm 8:5 (ESV): “Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.”
  • 1 Corinthians 6:3 (ESV): “Do you not know that we are to judge angels?” Believers will judge angels.
  • 1 Timothy 5:21 (ESV): “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels…” There are ‘chosen/elect’ angels, indicating rankings or selection.

Angelic Attributes and Roles

  • Psalm 103:20 (ESV): “Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word…” Angels possess supernatural might.
  • 2 Peter 2:11 (ESV): “…whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment…”
  • Mark 8:38 (ESV): “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words…of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
  • Colossians 2:18–19 (ESV): “Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels…” Angels must not be worshipped.
  • Revelation 22:8–9 (ESV): “…I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel…He said…‘Worship God.’”
  • Psalm 148:5 (ESV): “For he commanded and they were created.” Angels are not glorified humans or departed children but created beings.

Types of Heavenly Spiritual Beings

Seraphim

  • Seraphim means “fiery ones.” Isaiah 6:2–3 (ESV): “Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!’” Seraphim continually praise and uphold God’s holiness.

Cherubim

  • Cherubim are guardians and throne bearers.
    • Genesis 3:24 (ESV): “He drove out the man, and at the east of the Garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way…” Guardians of Eden.
    • Exodus 25:18–20 (ESV): Two cherubim were made for the ark of the covenant’s cover.
    • 1 Samuel 4:4 (ESV): “So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim.”
    • Ezekiel 10:14 (ESV): Cherubim described with four faces: cherub, man, lion, eagle.
    • 2 Samuel 22:11 (ESV): “He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind.” Cherubim as throne bearers.
  • Cherubim represent aspects of creation—lion (strength/honor), ox (service/sacrifice), eagle (vision/swiftness), man (humanity, intelligence).

Archangels

  • Michael is the only angel titled archangel.
    • Jude 1:9 (ESV): “But when the archangel Michael…”
    • Daniel 10:13,21 (ESV): Michael is described as a chief prince guarding Israel.
    • Revelation 12:7 (ESV): “Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon.”
    • 1 Thessalonians 4:16 (ESV): “…the voice of an archangel…”
  • Gabriel is a prominent messenger, though never called an archangel.
    • Luke 1:19,26 (ESV): Gabriel speaks to Zechariah and Mary.
    • Daniel 8:16; 9:21 (ESV): Gabriel brings Daniel messages.

Additional Classifications

  • Multitudes of unnamed angels serve God (Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 5:11).
  • Elect angels and watchers are mentioned, though less documented (Daniel 4:13; 1 Timothy 5:21).
  • No explicit mention of “guardian angels” but see Matthew 18:10 (ESV): “…their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”
  • Fallen angels described in Jude 1:6 (ESV): “…the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority…he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness…”.

Unique Status of Human Beings in God’s Plan

  • Humans are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27) and destined to reign with Christ—Hebrews 2:5 (ESV): “For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.”
  • Redemption is offered to humans, not angels—Hebrews 2:16 (ESV): “…he helps the offspring of Abraham.”
  • Angels minister to believers—Hebrews 1:14 (ESV): “Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?”
  • Angels do not comprehend redemption as humans do—1 Peter 1:12 (ESV): “…things into which angels long to look.”
