Sermon Title: Fear – The Leprosy of the Soul
February 11, 2026 / Findlay First Assembly of GodSermon Title: Fear – The Leprosy of the Soul
Key Verse: “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28:1)
“The just shall live by faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4)
Thesis: Fear is not just an emotion — it is a spiritual leprosy that starts small, spreads rapidly, numbs the heart, separates relationships, destroys destiny, and ultimately leads to spiritual death.
I. How Fear Operates Exactly Like Leprosy
- Highly Contagious – One fearful person can infect an entire church, family, or team.
- Starts Small but Spreads – Begins as a thought, becomes a confession, then paralyzes.
- Causes Numbness → Emotional & Spiritual Numbness (Common in PTSD & chronic fear)
- Progressive Loss – You gradually lose fingers (gifting), toes (direction), feet (walk of faith), and hands (ability to serve).
- Forces Isolation – Lepers had to live “outside the camp” (Lev. 13:46). Fear separates you from:
- Loved ones
- Healthy fellowship
- Intimacy with God
Key Contrast: Psalm 112:7 – “He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”
II. Moses: The 5 Classic Excuses of Fear (Exodus 3-4)
| Excuse | Scripture | Fear Behind It |
|---|---|---|
| 1. I’m not good enough | Ex. 3:11 | Identity & Inferiority |
| 2. I don’t have all the answers | Ex. 3:13 | Insecurity & Intellect |
| 3. People won’t believe me | Ex. 4:1 | Fear of Rejection |
| 4. I’m not eloquent | Ex. 4:10 | Fear of Public Failure |
| 5. Send someone else! | Ex. 4:13 | Ultimate Rebellion & Resignation |
Powerful Moment: God gives Moses the leprous hand sign (Ex. 4:6-8). → Leprosy = Death sentence. God is saying: “I have authority over death itself. I can make you clean again.”
This sign was only shown to Israel, not Pharaoh, because it is a sign for God’s people about deliverance from spiritual death.
III. The Roots of Leprosy (Fear)
- Miriam (Numbers 12) → Fear of Insignificance + Jealousy → Gossip & rebellion against authority = “Metzora” (Motzi-Ra = spreading evil)
- Gehazi (2 Kings 5) → Fear of Lack + Greed → Chose money over miracle → Leprosy clung to him forever
- King Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26) → Fear of Trusting Others → Tried to seize priestly role → Leprosy broke out on his forehead while raging
IV. The Turning Point – The 4 Lepers at Samaria’s Gate (2 Kings 7:3-9)
This is the climactic moment of the sermon:
“Why are we sitting here until we die? … Let’s go!”
Lessons:
- Fear says: “Stay safe. Don’t move.”
- Faith says: “Even if I die, I’m moving forward!”
- Their decision to take responsibility broke the siege over an entire nation.
- One bold move in faith can deliver many.
Thought for the Day: “When you use your head, you get ahead. Those who think don’t stink.”
V. The Cure: Jesus, The Leper Messiah
- Isaiah 53:4 – “We esteemed Him stricken (nagua = leprous), smitten of God…”
- Ancient Rabbis called Messiah “The Leper Scholar” because He bore our leprosy (sin & curse).
Jesus is the only one with authority over leprosy:
- He touches lepers (forbidden by law), and they are instantly healed.
- He is the fulfillment of Moses’ leprous hand sign.
Conclusion
Fear is a sin that leads to death. But perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
Today:
- Will you stop saying “Unclean! Unclean!” about yourself?
- Will you stop sitting at the gate waiting to die?
- Will you rise and walk by faith?
Final Challenge: Get up. Risk. Move. Your healing comes after humility, not before.
