Eternity: The Truth About Hell
October 12, 2025 / Findlay First Assembly of GodEternity: The Truth About Hell
Introduction: Confronting the Uncomfortable Reality of Eternity
If you truly believed what God says in the Bible about the horrors of hell, you would not continue in sin. Dismissing hell undermines the urgency of the Gospel and the depth of God’s love in sending Jesus to save us from it. Satan seeks to convince people that hell is not real or serious, leading them to justify sin, live without fear of God, and idolize comfort. For believers, the lie that hell is only for the “worst” people can foster self-centeredness, avoidance of sacrifice, and neglect of sharing the faith.
Statistics on Beliefs About Heaven and Hell
-
40% of people believe in an eternal hell.
-
Only 0.5% believe they themselves are likely to go to hell, viewing it as a place for only the “worst” people.
Big Thought: What you believe about eternity shapes how you live today. Belief in a purposeful creation by God and eternal consequences transforms your life.
Cultural Misconceptions and the Biggest Lie About Eternity
Hollywood and casual language often trivialize hell, depicting it as a party, but Scripture describes it as a place of profound torment. Funerals frequently claim the deceased are in a “better place,” contradicting Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 7:13-14:
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
-
Wide gate, easy road to hell: Greek polis = many.
-
Narrow gate, hard road to life: Greek oligos = few.
-
Globally, ~150,000 people die daily; per Jesus, most are on the broad road to hell.
I. Why Hell Exists
Why Was Hell Created?
Hell was not created for mankind but for Satan and his angels (Matthew 25:41): “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’”
Why Is Hell Eternal?
-
Eternity is not enough to satisfy the rejection of an eternal, loving, and righteous God who suffered for humanity. Jesus took our sin, faced separation from the Father, and atoned for us on the cross. Rejecting this sacrifice warrants eternal consequences.
-
Those in hell will continue to reject God forever, locking themselves in from the inside due to their free will.
-
The Weight of Sin: We don’t fully grasp sin’s severity—it required God’s death to atone for it.
-
The Consequences of Sin: Sin creates a soul that eternally rejects God.
II. The People of Hell
A. Rejectors
The greatest sin is rejecting Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, who bore our sins and God’s wrath (John 3:36): “He that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
-
Practicing sin reflects a rejection of Christ’s lordship (Revelation 21:7-8): “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the fearful, and the unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
B. Religious but Unregenerated
Some who are religious but lack a true relationship with Jesus will face hell (Matthew 7:22-23): “Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out demons? And in thy name done many wonderful works have been done? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.”
-
Tragic Deception: Religious acts (e.g., baptism, church membership) without obedience and a relationship with Jesus lead to eternal separation. A name on a church roll is meaningless if not in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
III. Dispelling Myths: Hell Does Not Belong to Satan
A common misconception is that Satan rules hell. This is cultural fiction, not biblical truth. Hell is God’s domain of judgment, where Satan has no authority.
-
Satan’s Current Status: He roams the earth as the “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2).
-
Satan’s Future Fate: He will be cast into the lake of fire to be tormented eternally, not to rule (Revelation 20:10): “And the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
-
Satan’s goal is to deceive people into joining him in hell, robbing God of His glory (John 10:10): “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”
IV. Jesus’ Teachings on Hell: Warnings from Love Incarnate
Jesus, as Love incarnate, spoke more about hell than heaven to urge repentance. His warnings are acts of mercy, not condemnation.
-
Frequency: Over 70 references to hell in the Gospels.
-
Vivid Descriptions:
-
Outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:12).
-
Unquenchable fire and undying worms (Mark 9:43-48).
-
Furnace of fire (Matthew 13:42).
-
V. The Reality and Descriptions of Hell: A Place of Eternal Torment
Hell is a real, eternal place, more vivid than earth, with heightened senses, absent from God’s presence, light, life, and love. It combines:
-
Outer darkness and fire.
-
Isolation amidst the screams of billions.
-
Hopeless regret with no peace.
Physical and Sensory Torments
-
Unquenchable fire (Revelation 14:10-11): “He also will drink the wine of God’s wrath… and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur… and the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.”
-
Undying worms eating flesh (Mark 9:48).
-
Outer darkness (Matthew 22:13; Jude 1:13).
-
Thirst and agony (Luke 16:24): “And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’”
-
Nauseating smells, choking sulfur (Revelation 19:20).
Mental Torments
-
Complete separation from God (2 Thessalonians 1:9): “They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.”
-
Eternal regret and memories (Luke 16:25).
-
No relief, hope, sleep, or escape: An uncrossable gulf separates hell from the righteous (Luke 16:26).
-
Isolation from the righteous (Luke 13:28).
VI. The Purpose of Hell: Divine Justice, Free Will, and Warning
Hell upholds God’s justice, respects free will, and serves as a warning to repent.
-
Created for Satan and Demons (Matthew 25:41).
-
Purpose: To punish rebellion and separate ultimate evil from God’s presence.
-
God’s Desire: None should perish (2 Peter 3:9): “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise… but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
VII. Degrees of Punishment
Punishment in hell varies based on knowledge and responsibility.
-
False Teachers: Deceive with a man-centered gospel, facing severe judgment (Jude 1:13).
-
Based on Knowledge (Luke 12:47-48): Those who knew God’s will but disobeyed face harsher punishment.
-
Based on Exposure to God’s Miracles (Matthew 11:20-24): Cities like Chorazin and Bethsaida face worse judgment than Sodom due to their rejection of Jesus’ works.
VIII. Avoiding Hell: The Path to Salvation
Hell is avoidable through repentance, faith in Christ, obedience, and endurance empowered by the Holy Spirit.
-
Repentance: Turn from sin (Acts 3:19): “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.”
-
Faith in Jesus: Confess and believe (Romans 5:8-9): “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us… we have now been justified by his blood… saved by him from the wrath of God.”
-
Obedience and Endurance: Faith requires action and perseverance (Matthew 24:13): “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
Conclusion: The Urgency of the Gospel
Every heartbeat could be your last—don’t delay.
-
For Believers: Live with urgency, share the Gospel, pray for the lost, and reject self-centeredness.
-
For Non-Believers: Repent and make Jesus your Lord today.
