Eternity Pt 4 – Heavenly Relationships
October 5, 2025 / Findlay First Assembly of GodEternity Pt 4 – Heavenly relationships
In Revelation 13:5-6 it says, “The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.”
Misconceptions About Heaven
- Common View: Many envision heaven as a lonely, monotonous, or even boring place—an eternity of sitting on clouds, strumming harps, with little joy or excitement.
- This perception can diminish the effectiveness of a Christian’s life, robbing them of joy and anticipation for eternity.
- It discourages sharing the gospel, as it’s hard to proclaim “good news” about a place that seems unappealing.
- Source of Misconceptions:
- The Bible identifies Satan as the “father of lies” (John 8:44).
- In Revelation 13:5-6, Satan (the beast) slanders God, His name, His dwelling place (heaven), and those who live there.
- By convincing believers that heaven is undesirable, Satan undermines their hope, causing them to focus on this life rather than the next. This diminishes their motivation to share their faith.
The Truth About Heaven: A Place Designed for Us
- Christ’s Promise: In John 14:2, Jesus assures us, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”
- Heaven is a place specifically designed for us, tailored to our eternal joy and fulfillment.
- God’s Original Plan:
- God never abandoned His plan for humans to dwell on earth. The climax of history will be the creation of a New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation 21:1), a resurrected universe inhabited by resurrected people living with the resurrected Jesus.
- Heaven is not a distant, ethereal realm but a renewed earth where God’s original design is restored.
Characteristics of Heaven on Earth
1. Timeless Living
- Earthly Life:
- Life on earth is marked by a “mad dash” between the two dates on a tombstone: birth and death. Time constraints limit our ability to love, grow, and build relationships fully.
- Producing the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc.) requires supernatural power because these qualities are timeless, yet we are mortal and time-bound.
- Heavenly Life:
- In heaven, life is defined by eternity, not impending death.
- There will be infinite time to:
- Grow, learn, and deepen relationships.
- Understand and enjoy God’s presence.
- Care for, love, and be patient with others without the pressure of time.
- The fruit of the Spirit, which requires miraculous power on earth, will be natural in heaven because we will live without the constraints of time.
2. Perfect Relationships
- No Marriage in Heaven:
- Jesus taught that there will be no marriage in heaven (Matthew 22:30). Instead, earthly marriages foreshadow the ultimate union between Christ and His church.
- Restored Relationships:
- Isaiah 11:6-9 describes a restored creation where even animals coexist peacefully: “The infant will play near the cobra’s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain.”
- If humans and animals will have restored relationships, human relationships will be even more profound.
- In heaven, relationships will be free from:
- Sin, selfishness, and misunderstandings.
- Fear, anxiety, and defensiveness.
- The termination of relationships by death.
- Perfect Friendships: Relationships will reach their apex, characterized by God’s love and presence, creating an environment of pure joy and connection.
- Healing from Pain:
- On earth, “hurting people hurt people,” and relationships often carry the risk of pain.
- In heaven, all trauma and soul wounds will be healed. Relationships will flow from a place of love and joy, not pain.
- Revelation 21:4 promises, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
3. No Strangers in Heaven
- A Place of Belonging:
- Heaven will have no strangers. Everyone will belong, have a place at the table, and be known and recognized.
- Acts 17:28 states, “For in him we live, and move, and have our being.” God’s presence will be the atmosphere of heaven, permeating every interaction.
- Maintaining Identity:
- Jesus maintained His identity after His resurrection (John 21:1-14), and believers will do the same in the New Earth.
- Examples:
- Peter, John, and others recognized Jesus after His resurrection.
- At the Transfiguration, Peter, James, and John recognized Moses and Elijah (Mark 9), despite never meeting them.
- On the road to Emmaus, the disciples were initially “kept from recognizing” Jesus (Luke 24:16), but their eyes were later opened (v. 31).
- Our relationships will continue, but trivial earthly concerns will fade, leaving only meaningful connections enriched by eternity.
4. A World of Peace
- Isaiah’s Vision:
- Isaiah 2:3-4 prophesies a time when nations will seek God’s ways, and He will judge between them: “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor train anymore for war.”
- This vision of peace extends to all relationships, with no conflict, pain, or division.
- A Joyous Atmosphere: Heaven will be a place of joy, peace, and perfect harmony, where God’s love is the foundation of every interaction.
The Path to Heaven and the Danger of Ruts
- Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
- The path to hell is a wide highway with deep ruts, easy to follow but leading to destruction.
- The path to heaven is narrow, requiring intentional faith and obedience (Matthew 7:13-14).
- Illustration: The Oregon Trail
- In Wyoming, the Oregon Trail ruts at Guernsey are carved four feet deep into sandstone by thousands of wagons. Pioneers found it easier to stay in the ruts than to forge a new path.
- A sign along the trail warns, “Be careful which ruts you get into, you’ll be in them for the next 25 miles!”
- Application:
- The Danger of Ruts: Like pioneers, we can fall into spiritual ruts, such as harboring bitterness or unforgiveness, which lead to hell.
- The Danger of Unforgiveness: Matthew 6:15 warns, “If you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive you.” Unforgiveness creates ruts that hinder our journey to heaven.
- Reconciliation: Matthew 5:23-24 urges believers to reconcile with others before offering gifts to God, emphasizing the importance of restored relationships.
Conclusion: Living with Heaven in View
- Correcting Misconceptions: To live effectively as Christians, we must reject Satan’s lies about heaven and embrace the biblical truth that it is a vibrant, joyous, and eternal home designed for us.
- Anticipating Heaven: By focusing on the promise of a New Heaven and New Earth, we can live with joy, share our faith boldly, and cultivate relationships that reflect God’s love.
- Call to Action:
- Forgive others to stay on the narrow path to heaven.
- Trust in Christ’s promise to prepare a place for us.
- Live with eternity in mind, allowing the hope of heaven to transform your life and relationships today.
