Courageous Pt-3 The Tyranny of Things

January 28, 2026   /   Findlay First Assembly of God

COURAGEOUS – PART 3: THE TYRANNY OF THINGS

Primary Text: Matthew 6:24-34

I. THE PRINCIPLE: SERVING ONE MASTER

A. The Core Command

  • Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and money.”
  • The choice is between ultimate loyalty to God or to wealth (mammon).

B. The Prohibition Against Anxiety

  • Matthew 6:25: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life…”
  • Greek Word: Merimnaō (μεριμνάω) – “to be anxious, to be troubled with cares, to have a divided mind.”

II. THE PROBLEM: CHASING SQUIRRELS (DIVIDED ATTENTION)

A. The Illustration

  • Like a dog distracted by a squirrel, believers can lose their peace and rest in God to chase security in money, positions, possessions, or people.

B. Identifying Your “Squirrel”

  • A financial, physical, or relational need.
  • A promotion or business venture.
  • Any temporal concern that displaces trust in God.

C. Historical Context of Wealth-Worship

  1. Syriac God of Wealth (Mammon)
    • Root: māmônā (ממון), related to Hebrew aman (אמן) – “to trust, to be faithful.”
    • Reflects where ultimate trust is placed.
  2. Roman Imperial Cult
    • “Caesar is lord” implied he was the source of security and provision.
    • Coins bore the emperor’s image, blending economic and religious loyalty.

III. UNDERSTANDING JESUS’S COMMAND: “DO NOT WORRY”

A. What Jesus Is NOT Dismissing

  • Legitimate concern or responsible planning (c.f., Proverbs 6:6-8).

B. What Jesus IS Forbidding
The anxiety that:

  1. Chases security in anything besides the Lord.
  2. Replaces trust in God.
  3. Questions God’s character and faithfulness.

C. Why Worry Is Forbidden

  1. It is ineffective: “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (v. 27).
  2. It dishonors God: It questions His character, power, and promises.
  3. It steals our present: We miss today’s grace while rehearsing tomorrow’s problems.
  4. It contradicts our identity: We live like orphans, not as children of the King.

D. What Worry Reveals

  1. What we truly treasure.
  2. Whom we truly serve.

E. The Trap: Reducing Life to Physical Needs

  • Anxiety equates life solely with food, drink, and clothing.

IV. THE ARGUMENT FROM CREATION

A. Look at the Birds (Matthew 6:26)

  • Observation: Birds don’t sow, reap, or store, yet God feeds them.
  • The Logic (Lesser to Greater): If God provides for birds (which don’t bear His image), how much more will He provide for you (made in His likeness)?
  • Note: Birds are not lazy; they work diligently. The command is to trust, not to be passive.

B. Consider the Lilies (Matthew 6:28-30)

  • Observation: God clothes the grass, which is temporary.
  • The Logic: If God adorns temporary grass, how much more will He clothe eternal beings of far greater value?

C. “You of Little Faith” (v. 30)

  • The problem is not a lack of faith, but small faith.
  • The antidote is growing bigger faith in a bigger God, not trying harder not to worry.

V. THE COMPARISON WITH PAGANS

  • Matthew 6:32: “For the Gentiles seek after all these things…”
  • The Pagan Mindset: Their gods were unreliable, forcing them to frantically “run after” provision.
  • The Christian Contrast: Our Heavenly Father knows our needs. Worry means we are thinking and acting like pagans.

VI. THE ALTERNATIVE TO WORRY: SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM

A. The Command (Matthew 6:33)

  • “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

B. What It Means

  1. Priority of Purpose: Making God’s reign your primary ambition in every decision.
  2. Direction of Energy: Shifting focus from “How will I survive?” to “How can I serve God’s Kingdom?”

VII. LIVING ONE DAY AT A TIME

A. The Command (Matthew 6:34)

  • “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow… Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

B. The Tyranny of Tomorrow

  • Most anxiety is about an imagined future, not present reality.
  • We compound today’s real challenges with tomorrow’s imagined ones.

C. The “Daily Bread” Principle

  • Echoes the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:11) and the manna in the wilderness.
  • God’s provision is daily to cultivate daily dependence and trust.

VIII. ADDRESSING OUR DOUBTS

A. “What about responsible planning?”

  • Planning is wisdom; panic is sin.
  • Plan diligently, but trust God’s promise, not your plans.

B. “What if I really don’t have enough?”

  • Jesus spoke to first-century peasants. His promise applies to all.
  • Your job is to seek His Kingdom; His job is to provide.

IX. HOW TO ELIMINATE WORRY AND ANXIETY: A BIBLICAL PATHWAY

A. Recognize the Command: God Forbids Worry

  • It is a present imperative: “STOP worrying!” (Matthew 6:25). It is obedience, not optional.

B. Understand the Root Causes

  1. Spiritual Roots:
    • Lack of/Little Faith (Matthew 6:30).
    • Serving the Wrong Master (Matthew 6:24).
    • Forgetting God’s Character as Father.
    • Living Like Pagans (self-reliance).
  2. Practical Roots:
    • Pride/Desire for Control.
    • “Tomorrow-Thinking” (Matthew 6:34).
    • Forgetting God’s Past Faithfulness.

C. Replace Worry with Biblical Practices

  1. PRAYER (Philippians 4:6-7):
    • The Formula: Be anxious for nothing → Pray about everything (with thanksgiving) → Receive God’s peace.
  2. GUARD Your Mind (2 Corinthians 10:5):
    • Recognize the enemy’s tactics (“What if…”).
    • Take every anxious thought captive to Christ.
  3. CULTIVATE CONTENTMENT (Philippians 4:11-13):
    • Contentment is learned through Christ’s strength.
  4. COMMUNITY (Galatians 6:2):
    • Don’t carry burdens alone. Share, ask for prayer, and receive help.
  5. WORK WITH PEACE, NOT PANIC:
    • Work diligently (2 Thessalonians 3:10) but trust God with the outcomes. Avoid frantic striving.

D. The Ultimate Trust: Jesus Is Our Provision

  1. He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35)—what we truly need.
  2. He was stripped (Matthew 27:35) so we could be clothed in His righteousness.
  3. Eternal perspective reduces temporal anxiety.

FINAL INVITATION & ILLUSTRATION

A. The Invitation

  • Jesus invites you to place faith over finances, believe His promises over panic, and seek His Kingdom over comfort.

B. The Illustration: The Man on the Train

  • Like a man refusing to set his burden down on a train carrying him, we often refuse to cast our cares on God, who sustains us.

Key Verse: 1 Peter 5:7 – “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

X. PRACTICAL STEPS: A DAILY PLAN

A. Morning Routine (10-15 min)

  1. Surrender: Give the day to the Lord; ask for daily bread.
  2. Scripture: Read and speak a passage on God’s faithfulness.
  3. Set Kingdom Priorities: Ask, “How can I seek Your Kingdom first today?”
  4. Gratitude List: Write 3-5 things you’re thankful for.

B. Throughout the Day (When Anxiety Hits)

  1. STOP the anxious thought.
  2. PRAY immediately and specifically.
  3. REPLACE the lie with a Bible truth.
  4. REDIRECT focus to your present responsibility or serving others.

C. Evening Routine (5-10 min)

  1. Review & Remember: Note how God provided today.
  2. Release Tomorrow: Pray Matthew 6:34.
  3. Sleep in Peace: Claim promises like Psalm 4:8.

The Promise: Philippians 4:6-7 – God’s peace will guard your heart and mind.
