When God Feels far: Finding God in the Famine

Big idea: God is at work even when all you see is loss, grief, and “empty.”

V.1-2 The time of Judges- There was no king in the land, and every man did as they saw fit. Elimelech (My God is King) is a pattern of trusting in self. Do we see God as king when hard times come?

V.3-5 Our actions impact others.

V.6 When God feels far: First step out of “Moab”: . Get back to Bethlehem.

V.7-19 When God feels far: toward God in the famine, not away

V.20-21 When God feels far: Don’t let circumstances your identity.

V.22 When God feels far: the king even in the famine. God is working most when it feels like He is absent.

Grow Group Questions:

  1. When have you faced a “famine” (loss, dryness, or hardship) that tempted you to step away from God’s ways or provision to find an easier path? What did you learn about returning to Him?
  2. When have you let pain or loss redefine how you see yourself (“I’m empty,” “I’m abandoned,” “I’m a failure”)? How can Scripture and community help us hold onto God’s true name/identity for us instead?
  3. The story invites return to God as Provider and King. Is there a specific area of your life where God might be gently calling you to “return” right now (a habit, attitude, relationship, or place of distance)? What would taking that first step look like?
  4. God often works in hidden ways during our famines. Share a time (yours or someone else’s) when you felt God was silent or absent, only to later discover He was already preparing something good (a person, provision, or turning point). How does that encourage you today?

Family Corner Summary

Ruth 1 tells a sad but hopeful story. A family leaves home during a famine, loses loved ones, and Naomi feels so empty she wants to be called “bitter” instead of “pleasant.” But her daughter-in-law Ruth stays with her and says, “Your people will be my people, and your God my God.” They return to Bethlehem just as the barley harvest begins. God was already getting food ready! Even when life feels dark and God seems far away, He never leaves the story. He’s working behind the scenes, timing things perfectly, and giving gifts we might not notice yet.

Questions:

  1. Ruth chose to stay with Naomi even when it was hard and scary. Who is someone who stays with you and helps you when things are tough (a parent, sibling, friend, or Jesus)? How does that make you feel safe or loved?
  2. Naomi thought she had nothing left, but God gave her Ruth and then food from the fields. Can you think of a time when you felt sad or like you had nothing good, but then God surprised you with something happy (a friend, a hug, help, or fun moment)? Tell or draw what happened!

Quick family tip: Read Ruth 1 together (it’s only 22 verses!) and pray something simple: “God, when we feel empty, help us trust You’re still working and You see us.” Perfect for dinner table or bedtime.
