James 5:7-11 | Patient Endurance
March 16, 2025 / Feather Sound ChurchJames 5:7-11 Patient Endurance
Big Idea: Believers must resist the temptation to control our lives even in the midst of exploitation and hardship and instead trust in God’s timing, justice and purpose.
V.7 In context, James says in light of the exploitation and injustice you experience, learn to be patient by looking at the practices of a farmer.
- The Preparation (for patience):
Lesson 1- 5:7 Prepare in advance through the Discipline of Daily Obedience
Most people crumble under exploitation and suffering, it is only when we prepare that we have victory. How to prepare (look at the farmer):
- Feeding: Prayer, Scripture, obedience
Daily discipline sustains spiritual growth (Psalm 1:2-3). Daily bread!
How: Make daily decisions to be in the word, in prayer and obey God in the little things—choose kindness, serve others and worship through gratitude and intentional reflection.
- Weeding: Repentance and Surrender
Why: Weeds of sin and distractions, if left unchecked, choke our spiritual growth. Regular repentance allows us to remove these obstacles.
How: Daily examine your heart, confess sins to God, and surrender your plans, acknowledging His will over your own (Luke 9:23).
How can you do that in the long game?
Lesson 2- V7/8 Keep Your Eyes on the Prize
The key for the farmer is the hope of harvest. For the suffering servant, it is a call to focus on the coming of the Lord as your motivation/hope.
How: Stay consistent in your spiritual disciplines, even when it feels mundane, trusting that God is working behind the scenes to bring a harvest in His perfect time.
Lesson 3- V.8 Strengthen Your heart with truth: Stockdale survived because he believed:
- suffering had meaning (truth)
- God would ultimately deliver—whether in life or death.
Lesson 4- V.9 Resist Bitterness and Complaining
Our complaints signal a lack of trust in God’s goodness and sovereignty.
- The Practice: How do I do the practice of lessons 1-4?
- v.10-11a Anchor Your Life in God’s Unchanging Promises like our Examples
The prophets were able to endure suffering for speaking God’s truth based on a promise keeping God, knowing he’d keep his future promises (and work things to good).
-
- V.11b Rest in God’s character: Mercy and Compassion
God’s character is our foundation for endurance. He sees our suffering, cares deeply, and will redeem it for His glory. Just like Job, our suffering will one day make sense in light of God’s plan.
Grow Group Questions:
- What are you trying to control instead of trusting in God?
- Can you think of a time when you had to endure something or wait patiently for something important? What helped you stay patient? How does a focus on the Lord’s return help?
- James compares patience to a farmer’s daily work. What’s one spiritual discipline (e.g., prayer, Scripture, obedience) you could practice daily to prepare for life’s hardships? How might it help you endure?
- James calls us to “strengthen your hearts.” What does that practically look like in your daily life?
- Why is grumbling connected to self-rule? When have you grumbled in hardship? What’s one way you could choose trust or praise instead this week?
- Share a time when God’s mercy surprised you in suffering. How does His character encourage you to wait for the harvest?
