James 2:14-26 | Action: The Evidence of a True Faith

January 26, 2025   /   Feather Sound Church

Action: the evidence of true faith” (James 2:14-26)

Big Idea: James’ math is: Saving Faith = Salvation + works NOT Faith + works = Salvation

1. (V.14-17) Faith without action is powerless. Heb. 11:6 Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists AND that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him“.

2. (V.18-19) Faith without Action is self-deceptive. Real faith naturally produces a surrender in obedience to God’s will.

V.20 Senseless in Greek- “empty” person. Mt. 7:21-23: Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven… And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from me. This is a scary statement.

3. (V.21-23) Faith with Action is Biblical Abraham’s faith was made complete by what he did.

The prophets Faith without obedience to God’s commandments was considered hypocritical.

John: “We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person” (1 John 2:3-4)

Paul: (Gal 5:6) “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love”

Jesus: “By their fruit you will recognize them… Every good tree bears good fruit” (Matthew 7:16-17)

“If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15) The challenge: actions demonstrate true belief.

V.24– Different questions being answered. Paul: How are we saved? James: How do we know if our faith is real? Complementary, not contradictory– Paul: we are saved by faith alone. James: Saving faith is never alone. Works don’t precede salvation; works proceed from salvation.

4. (V.25-26) Faith with action is living faith. Like a body without a spirit is dead, faith without action is a shell. The ‘Hall of Faith’ in Hebrews 11, every single person’s faith was demonstrated by action.

Caveat: Goal isn’t a spiritual to-do list: serve more, give more, try harder. Goal is surrendering our own “doing” to connect with God. Jesus’ pattern: see need → pray → receive direction → take Spirit-led action. It’s not about doing more FOR God; it’s about doing life WITH God.

Application: “Surrendered Faith or Cultural Christianity?”

How do I know if I am deceiving myself? A fruit test from 1 John. (See below) The tests are summarized by one thing: Is there a growing surrender to Jesus as Lord. Master? Or am I in charge?

Grow Group Questions:

  1. Personal Faith Audit Look at the Fruit Test below from 1 John. Discuss areas that you are doing well in but also share areas you’d like help and accountability with. Be specific.
  2. The Surrender Test “What’s one area of your life where you know God is calling you to surrender, but you’ve been resistant? What’s the root fear or hesitation holding you back?”
  3. What specific action has God been prompting you to take that would demonstrate your faith? What’s stopping you?
  4. Where do you see yourself most influenced by cultural Christianity rather than biblical faith? How has this affected your decisions and relationships?
  5. If someone followed you around for a week, what evidence would they see of a transformed life? What areas would show little difference from non-believers?

Follow-up Discussion Prompts:

  • What steps will you take this week to move from knowledge to action?
  • How can we as a group help each other live out an increasingly authentic faith?
  • What spiritual disciplines might help develop a more surrendered faith?

Main “tests” of authentic faith from 1 John, often called “The Tests of Life”:

1. The Moral Test (Obedience)

  • If I look at my life, am I walking in light vs. darkness (1:6-7)
  • Is there an imperfect but increasing pattern of keeping His commands (2:3-6)
  • Am I practicing unconfessed habitual sin (3:4-10)
  • Is there an increasing pattern of living righteously (2:29)

2. The Relational Test (Love)

  • Do I have a growing love for fellow believers (2:9-11, 3:10, 3:14-15, 4:7-8, 4:20-21)
  • Is there an increasing practical love shown in actions (3:16-18)
  • Do I love God’s kingdom first or do I prefer the world system (2:15-17)
  • Am I growing in a sacrificial love modeled after Christ (3:16)

3. The Doctrinal Test (Truth)

  • Do I believe Jesus is the Christ (5:1)
  • Do I accept biblical apostolic teaching (4:6)
  • Do I have a right view of sin as God determines or does my culture determine it (1:8-10)
  • Do I have a belief in Jesus as Son of God (5:10-13)

4. The Spirit Test

  • Do I see the internal witness of the Spirit in my life (3:24, 4:13)
  • Am I following the leading of the Holy Spirit (2:20, 2:27)
  • Do I have increasing spiritual discernment (4:1-6)

5. The Perseverance Test

  • Am I continuing in the faith (2:19)
  • Am I remaining in fellowship (1:3-7)
  • Am I enduring in solid doctrine (2:24-25)

6. The Heart Test

  • Do I have an increasing desire for fellowship with God (1:3-4)
  • Do I have an increasing love for God’s Word (2:14)
  • Is there an increasing hatred of sin (3:4-10)
  • Do I have an increasingly clear conscience before God (3:19-21)

7. The Prayer Test

  • Am I growing in my confidence in approaching God (3:21-22)
  • Am I interceding for others (5:16)

Key Points about these Tests:

  1. They’re progressive, not perfective and they work together, not in isolation
  2. They’re evidences, not means of salvation
  3. They’re meant to assure, not condemn
  4. They reflect the transformation process

Notes for your inner nerd: Statistics that show the gap between proclaimed faith and lived faith:

General Christian Claims vs. Practice

  • 65% of Americans identify as Christian yet only 36% attend religious services monthly
  • Only 28% read the Bible regularly outside of church
  • 39% of self-identified Christians say “living a moral life” gets you to heaven

Beliefs vs. Biblical Worldview (Barna) Among self-proclaimed Christians:

  • 52% don’t believe in absolute moral truth and 58% say it is relative to circumstances
  • 61% don’t believe Jesus is the only way to heaven
  • 72% don’t view the Bible as entirely accurate

Lifestyle Statistics– Self-identified Christians compared to non-Christians show little difference in:

  • Gambling habits; Divorce rates (similar to general population)
  • Entertainment choices (only 23% say faith influences their entertainment choices)
  • Charitable giving (only 5% tithe- give a portion of their income)
  • Only 14% of Christians say their faith significantly influences their political views

Ethical decision-making in business

  • 64% of Generation Z who grew up in church have dropped out (no discipleship)
  • Only 10% of Christian young adults have a biblical worldview
  • 47% of Millennial Christians believe evangelism is wrong!!!!

Conclusion: there is an urgent need for discipleship and embracing a lens by which we view the world through God’s eyes.
