“Courageous Confrontation” (Galatians 2:11-14)

v.11-14 The problem: v.13 his sin led others into hypocrisy by v.14 deviating from the truth

Source of the problem: v.12b- Fear of man vs. Faith in God. Principles on confronting:

1. Truth as the test. V. 14a, 15-18; 21 When truth is tried, we don’t hide. Is. 7:9 stand firm.

2. Audience of one. V.19-20 I don’t live for anyone’s approval or direction but God’s. Rom. 14:4. When there is an issue, how do I confront in a way that honors God and others?

  1. Confront or conceal. Pr. 19:11 man’s glory to overlook an offense; (Decision tree):
    1. Confront: If it is close-fisted essential that we hold tightly to. Truth
    2. Conceal (overlook): Non-essentials or preferences-I can give grace.
  2. Wisdom in where: V.11. Face to face. Gossip is always sin!
    1. Privately. Default. Matthew 18:15: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you.”
    2. Publicly: Mt. 18 Jesus says a sin matter becomes increasingly public if the person won’t respond to correction. Exceptions: Public sin and leadership.1 Timothy 5:19-20: “those elders who are sinning (present progressive) you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning.” V.14 Peter’s sin was public.
  3. How:
    1. Self-confrontation: Matthew 7:3-5, Jesus says to take out any logs first to see clearly. Repent of your own junk first.
    2. Truth AND Love: Ephesians 4:15. Don’t do it without both.
    3. Attack issues, not people. Paul addressed Peter’s actions, not his character. Focus on understanding the interests behind the position.
    4. Manner matters: Don’t respond emotionally. Instead: Gently (Gal. 6:1); Kindness goes a long way; Empathy– attempt to understand them; choose to believe the best of another. Use “I” words to explain how the person’s actions impact you.
  4. Goal: Gospel or Restoration not rights or retribution. Gal. 6:1, 2 Corinthians 13:11say the goal is restoration. Paul tailored his approach with the gospel in mind not his rights.

Grow Group Questions:

  1. Peter’s actions were driven by fear of man rather than faith in God. Can you think of a recent situation where you felt pressured to compromise your beliefs due to fear of criticism or rejection? How can we cultivate a stronger ‘audience of one’ mentality in our daily lives?
  2. Cultural Biases and the Gospel: What are some cultural biases in our society today that might hinder the full expression of the Gospel? How can we identify and address these in our own lives and in our church community?
  3. Confrontation Decision-Making: Think of a current conflict or disagreement in your life. How would you apply this decision-making process to your situation? What factors would you consider in deciding whether to confront or overlook the issue?
  4. Wisdom in Confrontation: Paul confronted Peter face-to-face. Can you share an experience where a face-to-face conversation was more effective than communication through social media or other indirect means?”
  5. Gospel-Centered Conflict Resolution: The ultimate goal of confrontation should be restoration and advancing the Gospel, not asserting our rights or seeking retribution. How might this perspective change the way you approach conflicts in your personal relationships, workplace, or church? Can you think of a situation where focusing on restoration rather than being right could lead to a better outcome?
