From Hosanna to Hatred: Standing United When Forces Divide- Nehemiah 4-6
April 13, 2025 / Feather Sound ChurchFrom Hosanna to Hatred: Standing United When Forces Divide-
Nehemiah 4-6
Big Idea: Division is one of Satan’s primary strategies to destroy God’s kingdom. He tends to attack externally before moving internally and lastly, he attacks the leadership.
External Pressure → Internal Doubt → Relational Division → Leadership failure → Mission Abandonment
- External Opposition– (Nehemiah 4:1-3) our fight isn’t really against flesh and blood. It’s spiritual.
- V.1-2 Sanballat- targets their identity and ability to render ineffective their faith in both their mission and themselves. He whispers seeds of doubt.
- V.3 Tobiah’s (YHWH is good) are deceptive. His goal? Question your purpose, calling and mission by removing resolve and hope through doubt.
- V.8 They sow fear in the mind. They subtly insert doubts like The opposition is too great, we are too weak, maybe I missed out on God’s plan.
The goal? Get us off God’s work by disrupting it through sowing seeds of disunity, division and distraction. Satan wants us divided, discouraged, doubting and dejected.
Counter Strategy: It doesn’t matter if this is the church, politics or your family.
- 4:4-5,9; 5:19; 6:9,14 Prayer rather than turn to your emotions.
- 4:6; 6:3 Perseverance– Stay focused and firm on the mission, not the opposition.
- 4:13-14a Proclaim– Tell your mountain how big your God is. We need to remind ourselves of God’s power and control and purposes.
- 4:3b,14b Partnership– The power wasn’t in their numbers but their oneness.
II. Division from Within (Nehemiah 5)
The underlying problem in Nehemiah 5 and James 5 is a self-centeredness and a disregard for community unity and God’s commands to maintain that unity.
Response: Purification
- V.6-7 Recognize and Confront– He considered it seriously, biblically confronted directly, with an end goal of:
- v. 9-11 Repentance and Restoration for the Sake of God’s Mission
Nehemiah focused on the bigger picture: the mission of rebuilding the walls for God’s glory.
III. Attacks the leaders (Nehemiah 6)
Nehemiah 6:1–5; 12-13 – Attempts to distract leaders from their calling or discredit leaders from the work through threats, lies and fake news.
Response: v.8-9 Nehemiah kept God at the center, refused to engage, let God defend his reputation and stayed focused on the mission.
Grow Group Questions:
- When have you experienced opposition while trying to do God’s work? How did you respond, and what did you learn?
- What internal divisions have you observed in Christian communities? How could these situations have been handled differently using Nehemiah’s example?
- How do you distinguish between /handle legitimate concerns that need addressing and Satan’s attempts to create division?
- In what ways might you be contributing to unity or division in your church/family/workplace? What needs to change?
- How can we better support our leaders when they face opposition or attacks?
Family Discussion Questions (Kids):
Today we learned that God’s people are like three pieces of rope braided together – we’re much stronger when we stick together than when we’re alone. Satan tries to pull us apart by making us fight or be scared, just like trying to unravel a braid, but God wants us to stay close to Him and each other so we can do amazing things for His kingdom
- Why do you think it’s important for family members/friends to stick together? How does working together make us stronger? (Use the three-strand cord as a visual aid)
- What are some things that can make people fight or stop working together? How can we help fix these problems?
- How can we help each other stay focused on what God wants us to do, even when things get hard?
