2 Peter 2:1-22 Counterfeit Christianity: Recognizing and Resisting False Teachers

Big idea: Peter warns us that false teachers sneak into the church with twisted teachings that feel good but deny Jesus as Lord, driven by greed, pride, and sin; yet God will surely judge them and rescue those who stay faithful to the true gospel.

V.1 Warning 1-Wolves in Wool:False teachers enter secretly.

What are some heresies in 2026?

  1. Feelings over truth: Progressive/liberal theology that elevates feelings and agendas over scripture and repentance.
  2. Jesus as an accessory: Moralism and hyper grace that reject Jesus’ call to holiness and his Lordship over our lives and avoids repentance and submission.
  3. Digital heresy: media that trigger emotional responses that disciples us toward self-selected teachings that deny Jesus’ lordship and polarizes people to division.

V.2 Why it matters: Many of us will be deceived if we are not discerning.

V.3a How to recognize them?

1. V.1,3a Corrupt: Fake news and Twisted truth that appeals to our emotions,

desires and the flesh: feel good message.

V.3b,4-9 God’s promises: to judge the ungodly and rescue the godly

2. v.10-12 Corrupt view of : Rebels that despise accountability but love glory.

3. V.13-14 Corrupt: twist truth to increasingly enjoy sin. Like Gal.5:1

a. V.14a Unchecked pride influences desires that can lead to adultery- Girls/guys

b. V.14b-16 *they have their hearts trained in greed. Gold. Result: 14b accursed

V.17-22 The takeaway warning is that the more familiar you are with Jesus, the more severe the punishment for a false teacher.

Questions to discern a false teaching/teacher:

1. Does this teaching change who Jesus is or what He commanded?

2. Does this teaching minimize sin or excuse unholy living?

3. Does this teacher rely on charisma, exaggeration, or arrogance instead of Scripture?

4. Does this ministry seem to be built on money, influence, or self-promotion?

5. Does this teacher have accountability with others who can confront freely?

Questions for Grow Group Discussion

  1. What are some “feel-good” teachings or online voices you’ve encountered that might subtly downplay Jesus’ lordship, repentance, or biblical truth & how do they compare to the destructive heresies Peter describes?
  2. How can we guard against being deceived by charisma, emotions, or algorithms that feed our desires?
  3. Looking at Peter’s progression- (corrupt doctrine → rejecting authority → greedy/sensual conduct), which red flag is easiest to miss in gifted leaders today, and why?
  4. How does the reassurance that God judges the ungodly and rescues the godly) give you hope or courage when you see false teaching or compromise in the church or online?

Family Corner:

False teachers are like sneaky wolves dressed as sheep who sneak into God’s family and tell lies that sound nice but lead people away from following Jesus as the real Boss. God promises to punish the bad guys and keep His true friends safe, so we should stick close to the Bible and true Christian friends to stay on the right path!

Questions for the Ride Home:

  1. What do you think a “fake teacher” might say or do that sounds okay but isn’t following Jesus the right way (like maybe promising easy money or saying rules don’t matter)?
  2. How can we make sure we’re listening to the real truth about Jesus instead of tricky stuff online or from people who just want attention?
