Unstoppable: Wk. 9 (Persecutor to Proclaimer)
July 5, 2026 / First Baptist Church ElginDay 1: Grace for the Worst of Sinners
Scripture Emphasis: Acts 9:1-6
Saul’s conversion reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. Before meeting Jesus, Saul was not searching for God. He was actively opposing Him. Yet Jesus pursued Saul while Saul was still in rebellion. This teaches us an important truth: salvation begins with God’s initiative, not ours.

- Was Saul moving toward God or away from God when Jesus confronted him?(MULTILINE)
- According to Romans 5:8, what does Christ’s death reveal about God’s love for sinners?(MULTILINE)
- What does Ephesians 2:1-5 teach about our spiritual condition before salvation?(MULTILINE)
- Why do you think people sometimes believe they are beyond God’s forgiveness?(MULTILINE)
- How does Saul’s story challenge that belief?(MULTILINE)
Summary
One of the most remarkable aspects of Saul’s conversion is that Jesus did not wait for Saul to clean up his life before extending grace. Saul was still threatening believers and traveling to arrest Christians when Christ interrupted his journey. This demonstrates the heart of the gospel: salvation is not earned through good behavior but received through God’s grace. The same grace that transformed Saul is available to every sinner today. No past failure, rebellion, or mistake is greater than the grace of God.
Application
Is there a sin, failure, or part of your past that makes you question whether God could truly forgive you? Spend time thanking God for His grace and confessing any areas where you have doubted the sufficiency of Christ’s forgiveness.
Day 2: When God Sees What Others Cannot
Scripture Emphasis: Acts 9:10-16
Ananias saw a persecutor. God saw a missionary. Ananias saw Saul’s past. God saw Saul’s future. This passage reminds us that God sees people differently than we often do.

- What was Ananias’ first response when God told him to go to Saul?(MULTILINE)
- Why was Ananias hesitant?(MULTILINE)

- What does 1 Samuel 16:7 teach about how God sees people?(MULTILINE)
- Have you ever written someone off as being beyond change? Why?(MULTILINE)
- What does this passage teach about God’s ability to transform people?(MULTILINE)
Summary
People tend to define others by their past. God sees beyond the failures, labels, and reputations that often shape our opinions. God knew exactly who Saul had been, yet He still called him “My chosen instrument.” The gospel is filled with stories of God redeeming broken people and using them for His purposes. God’s grace does not merely forgive sinners—it transforms them into servants.
Application
Think of someone who seems far from God. Pray specifically for that person today. Ask God to help you see them through His eyes rather than through the lens of their past.
Day 3: Trusting God’s Perfect Timing
Scripture Emphasis: Acts 9:3
Saul was approaching Damascus. He was moments away from carrying out his plans against believers when Jesus intervened. God’s timing was neither early nor late—it was perfect.
Discover
Read Acts 9:1-9
- How close was Saul to reaching Damascus when Jesus appeared to him?(MULTILINE)
- Why is that detail significant?(MULTILINE)
- Read Ecclesiastes 3:1. What does this verse teach about God’s timing?(MULTILINE)
- Read 2 Peter 3:9. What reason does Peter give for God’s patience?(MULTILINE)
- Why is waiting on God often difficult?(MULTILINE)
- Looking back on your life, can you identify a situation where God’s timing proved better than your own?(MULTILINE)
Summary
God’s timing often feels slow from our perspective because we cannot see the full picture. Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly demonstrates that He works according to His perfect wisdom. The believers in Damascus likely had no idea how close Saul was to carrying out his plans, but God knew. At precisely the right moment, Jesus intervened. The same God who worked in Saul’s life is still at work today, even when His timing is difficult to understand.
Application
Identify one situation where you have been tempted to lose patience with God. Write it down and spend time praying specifically for the faith to trust His timing.
Day 4: Jesus Meets Us on Dangerous Roads
Scripture Emphasis: Acts 9:3-9
The road to Damascus began as a path of destruction, but it became a place of deliverance. God often meets people in the very places where they are headed in the wrong direction.
Discover
Read Acts 9:3-9
- What was Saul intending to do when he traveled to Damascus?(MULTILINE)
- How did Jesus interrupt Saul’s plans?(MULTILINE)
- Read Proverbs 14:12. What warning does this verse give?(MULTILINE)
- What are some “roads” people travel today that seem right but ultimately lead to destruction?(MULTILINE)
- Why do people often continue down destructive paths even when warning signs are present?(MULTILINE)
- What does Saul’s story teach about God’s ability to redirect a life?(MULTILINE)
Summary
Sin always promises freedom but ultimately leads to bondage and destruction. Saul believed he was serving God, yet he was fighting against God’s purposes. Many people today walk destructive paths without realizing where they lead. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus specializes in rescuing people from roads that lead to ruin. No path is too dark, and no situation is too hopeless for God’s intervention.
Application
Ask God to reveal any area of your life where you may be drifting toward compromise, pride, or self-reliance. What step of obedience do you need to take today?
Day 5: Transformation That Cannot Be Hidden
Scripture Emphasis: Acts 9:20-22
Saul’s encounter with Jesus did not simply change what he believed. It changed how he lived. Genuine faith produces visible transformation.
Discover
Read Acts 9:20-22
- What was the first thing Saul began doing after his conversion?(MULTILINE)
- How did people respond to the change they saw in him?(MULTILINE)
- Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. What happens when someone is in Christ?(MULTILINE)
- According to James 2:17, what is the relationship between faith and action?(MULTILINE)
- What evidence of spiritual growth should be visible in a believer’s life?(MULTILINE)
- How has Jesus changed you since you first trusted Him?(MULTILINE)
Summary
Salvation is by grace alone, but grace never leaves a person unchanged. Saul went from persecuting believers to proclaiming Christ. While spiritual growth takes time, genuine conversion produces a new direction in life. The Holy Spirit works within believers to transform their desires, priorities, and actions. The goal of the Christian life is not merely knowing about Jesus but becoming more like Him.
Application
Take a few moments to reflect on how God has changed you over the years. Thank Him for His transforming work, and ask Him to continue shaping you into the image of Christ this week.
