Digging Deeper: Q & A with Pastor Jason & Pastor Kevin

August 10, 2025   /   First Baptist Church Elgin

Day 1: Am I Ready to Make Disciples?

Summary:
Many of us wonder: Do I know enough to disciple someone else? But Jesus didn’t ask His followers to be experts—He simply said, “Follow Me.” Discipleship isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about sharing what you do know, and walking with someone one step at a time.

Read:

  • Matthew 28:19–20

  • 2 Timothy 2:2

  • John 16:13

Background:
Jesus’ model for making disciples was always relational, not academic. He taught by walking, asking questions, and modeling faith. That same posture—of guiding and walking with others—empowers us to disciple even as we grow.

Key Words:

  • Disciple – a follower and learner of Jesus.

  • Multiply – to invest in others who can invest in others.

  • Obedience – the goal of discipleship isn’t knowledge alone, but transformation.

Theological Truths:

“Discipleship is helping someone take one step closer to Jesus.” – Robert Coleman

“You don’t need to know more to obey more. You just need to live what you already know.” – Kevin DeYoung

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What holds me back from investing in others?(MULTILINE)

  2. Have I made discipleship more complicated than Jesus intended?(MULTILINE)

  3. Who is one spiritually hungry person I could invite into a discipling relationship?(MULTILINE)

Application:
Pray and write down the name of one person God may be calling you to disciple. Reach out to them and invite them to meet regularly to learn and grow together in Christ.

Day 2: How Do I Get Connected?

Summary:
Many people feel lost in a large church or busy world. But connection happens when we take relational risks—inviting others to coffee, joining a group, or simply asking good questions. Healthy relationships are the soil for spiritual growth.

Read:

  • Acts 2:42–47

  • Hebrews 10:24–25

  • Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

Background:
We were never meant to grow alone. From the beginning, the early church prioritized fellowship, teaching, and shared meals. Today, God still works powerfully through community—especially through small groups, one-on-one discipleship, and shared service.

Key Words:

  • Fellowship – shared life in Christ.

  • Intentionality – taking the initiative to build community.

  • Belonging – the deep human need to be seen and known.

Theological Truths:

“The gospel moves at the speed of relationship.” – Jeff Vanderstelt

“We are saved into community. To follow Jesus is to follow Him with His people.” – Tim Chester

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Am I pursuing community or just waiting for it to find me?(MULTILINE)

  2. How might God want me to take a step toward deeper connection this week?(MULTILINE)

  3. Who could I invite into a spiritual conversation or gathering?(MULTILINE)

Application:
Reach out to someone you met recently at church. Invite them to coffee, lunch, or to sit with you next Sunday. Initiate the kind of relationship you wish someone would offer you.

Day 3: Where Can I Serve, and Am I Qualified?

Summary:
Serving is not about skill—it’s about willingness. God delights in using ordinary people in ordinary places for extraordinary Kingdom impact. Whether it’s setting up chairs, teaching children, greeting guests, or discipling one-on-one, your gifts matter.

Read:

  • 1 Peter 4:10–11

  • Romans 12:4–8

  • Mark 10:43–45

Background:
The body of Christ functions best when every part is active. Some roles require training, but most just require a willing heart. The question is not “Am I qualified?” but “Am I available?”

Key Words:

  • Giftedness – every believer is uniquely equipped.

  • Availability – readiness to step into a need.

  • Servanthood – the heart posture of Christ Himself.

Theological Truths:

“Every contact with a person is a divine appointment.” – Charles Spurgeon

“God does not call the equipped. He equips the called.” – Oswald Chambers

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What opportunities to serve am I ignoring or delaying?(MULTILINE)

  2. Have I surrendered my time and talents to God’s mission?(MULTILINE)

  3. What’s one new way I can serve the church or my community this week?(MULTILINE)

Application:
Take 5 minutes today to explore where your church needs help. Pick one area and say, “I’m willing to learn.” Trust that God will grow you as you serve.

Day 4: Why Do We Talk So Much About Invitation?

Summary:
Inviting people—to church, to coffee, to Christ—is not a program, it’s a way of life. Every follower of Jesus is called to be an inviter: not just to an event, but into a relationship with God and His people.

Read:

  • Luke 14:21–23

  • John 1:40–42

  • Matthew 9:37–38

Background:
Most people come to church or Christ because someone they trusted invited them. When we invite others, we are participating in the harvest Jesus said is already ripe.

Key Words:

  • Invite – to open the door for relationship.

  • Harvest – people prepared by God, waiting to be reached.

  • Witness – one who tells what they’ve experienced.

Theological Truths:

“Invitation is not about perfection, it’s about presence. Be with people and point to Jesus.” – David Platt

“Prayer is the real work. Evangelism is just gathering the results.” – Leonard Ravenhill

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Who has God placed in my life that I could invite into spiritual community?(MULTILINE)

  2. What’s holding me back from speaking up about my faith?(MULTILINE)

  3. How can I create space in my life for more gospel conversations?(MULTILINE)

Application:
This week, invite someone to church, to your small group, or into a spiritual conversation. Don’t overthink it. Just be real and kind—and let God do the rest.

Day 5: What’s My Next Step?

Summary:
Faith grows through movement. Whether it’s joining a group, leading one, or discipling someone new—your next step matters. God calls every believer to take what they’ve learned and pass it on to someone else.

Read:

  • Philippians 3:16

  • James 1:22

  • Acts 6:1–7

Background:
It’s easy to get stuck in learning mode. But growth happens when we obey what we know. The church multiplies when everyday believers take simple steps of faith and help others do the same.

Key Words:

  • Obedience – acting on what you’ve received.

  • Multiplication – disciples who make disciples.

  • Faithfulness – showing up and stepping forward.

Theological Truths:

“Live up to whatever truth you have attained.” – Philippians 3:16

“The goal is not to learn more, but to pass on what you already know.” – Francis Chan

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What truth have I learned that I’m not yet living out?(MULTILINE)

  2. Is there someone I should be training or encouraging to grow?(MULTILINE)

  3. What simple, bold next step could I take in my walk with Christ?(MULTILINE)

Application:
Take 15 minutes to pray and write down your next step—whether it’s discipling someone, joining a ministry, or starting a spiritual conversation. Then act on it by the end of the week.
