Wk:02 My Own Worst Enemy
(Romans 7:15-19) I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me … For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.
5 Steps to Self-Sabotage
1. Ego
Lie we believe: I know .
(Proverbs 11:2 NLT) Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
2. LIFE MISMANAGEMENT
Lie we believe: I’ll get to it .
(Proverbs 13:16 NLT) Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.
3. INDULGENCE
Lie we believe: I it.
(1 Corinthians 6:12 MSG) Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.
4. ISOLATION
Lie we believe: I can do it on my own.
(Proverbs 18:1 NASB) One who separates himself seeks his own desire; He quarrels against all sound wisdom.
5. SELF-SABOTAGE
Lie we believe: It’s not .
No one plans to derail their life but few plan not to.
4 Guardrails to Live By:
Guardrail 01: I will live an life.
(Philippians 2:3-9) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name …
(Proverbs 11:25) A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
Guardrail 02: I will live with and .
(1 Corinthians 9:27 ESV) But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
Guardrail 03: I will raise my .
(Galatians 2:20) I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Guardrail 04: I will invest in relationships.
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 ) Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
