Wrote 70 of the Psalms

Context in Scripture:

God has been Israel’s king…

They want another king

God provides a king

Saul is chosen as king

David’s anointing reveals 3 things about our great God and King:

1. God is faithful to the unfaithful

1 Samuel 16:1

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

Romans 5:8

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

A pre-occupation with the past can keep you from seeing God do something new.

“Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” – C.S. Lewis

2. God looks beyond outward appearances

1 Samuel 16:6-7

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

We tend to see things based on appearances:

Physical – How people look

Material – What people have

Social – Who people know

(MULTILINE)

We also measure our own significance and value:

I am where I live

I am what I own

I am how I look

I am who I know

Matthew 23:25

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

1 Samuel 16:11

Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.”

Stop always looking to the next season;

Start asking what God wants to do in this season.

Stop trying to look the part;

Start to cultivate your heart.

3. God always prepares us for what is ahead

1 Samuel 16:12b-13

And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

Anointing – set apart for God’s purposes; receive God’s presence in a unique way

Luke 4:18

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,

to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

“God are you sure you chose the right one?”

Zechariah 4:6

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.
