Ten Tips for Fighting Fair
- Confront problems as soon as possible after they arrive.
- Master the art of listening
- Limit the discussion of the conflict to the present issue.
- Use “I” messages in making your point in expressing your emotions.
- Avoid exaggerations such as “always” or “never”.
- Avoid character assassinations (name-calling, put-downs)
- Use appropriate words and actions for the matter at hand. Not all arguments are worth fighting at peak volume (nothing is worth that).
- Don’t be concerned about winning or losing the argument.
- Determine limits / boundaries. Damaging comments must be avoided.
- Choose to forgive.
