Philippians 4:4-9 (NASB) “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Hebrews 5:11-14 (NLT). There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

Matthew 7:24-25 (NKJV) “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
2 Timothy 3:15-17 (NKJV) and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

John 16:7 (NKJV) Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

John 16:13 (NKJV) However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
III. The last days require a church
1. A church that knows

2. A church with
Acts 2:17 – 18 (NKJV) And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
Study Questions:
1. What emotions do you experience when you hear the term “last days”? Why do you think you feel that way?
2. Do you ever wish that you could talk to Jesus face to face? How would that change your relationship with him?
3. Do you believe it is to your advantage that Jesus is no longer physically on the planet? What do you think went through the disciples minds when Jesus said this?
4. How should the day of Pentecost affect our lives? Why do we seem to fall short of these ideals?
5. As a Christian, do you have a vision for your life? Is it connected to the church?
New Things for a New Day
“New Things” are exciting to those who trust God
- God’s reminds Israel of His character
- God reminds Israel of His competition
We must empty our hands to receive God’s “New Thing”
- Memorialize the past, don’t idolize the past
- Leviticus 26:10 (NKJV)
- Learn from the past, don’t live in the past
- Get on board, or get left behind
The hardest part of God’s “New Thing” is the need for change
- Change is a challenge
- It rocks the boat
- It disrupts your comfort zone
- It demands sacrifice
- God’s change is rewarding
- God promises supernatural guidance
- God promises to meet needs
- God promises a joy filled experience
Study Questions:
- The first 17 verses of Isaiah 43 are a reminder of God’s greatness. Which character traits are the most comforting to you? Why?
- Can you name two or three things God has done for you in the past?
- What do you need to let go of in order to embrace God’s “New Thing”?
- Are you quick to embrace change or slow to embrace change?
- Since God promises guidance, provision, and joy why do we still resist God’s “New Things”?
When you think about suffering, what comes to mind? Do you envision bedraggled children with distended stomachs, a hospital patient hooked up to life-sustaining medical equipment, or a courageous veteran dealing with the aftermath of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Adversity seems to be a common denominator to human existence, but what does the Bible have to say about suffering?
Jesus spoke to His disciples about suffering. One of the most well-known verses reads, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24 ESV). The Greek word for cross in this verse is staurós. It refers to the crossbeam which the lowest criminals carried as they trudged toward their execution. The cross symbolized degradation and indescribable pain as well as sacrifice.
While the invitation to eternal life is free, it comes at a price–certain suffering.
