One Mother Makes a Difference

Acts 12:12 NKJV

12 So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying.

Acts 12:12 RVR60

12 Y habiendo considerado esto, llegó a casa de María la madre de Juan, el que tenía por sobrenombre Marcos, donde muchos estaban reunidos orando.

WELCOME TO ILLUMINATE

About Cross Church

HOW WE STARTED

In September 2016, the Blackburn family received a call from God to become Metro Missionaries to the Greater Kansas City area. Cross Church was born out of this call and burden of Mark and Crystal Blackburn to reach Kansas City for Jesus Christ. They envision the church as a family who loves and cares for one another regardless of personal history, family background, ethnicity, or gender and are living on mission for Jesus Christ.

The Blackburn family moved to Olathe in July of 2018, 25 years to the month after they first discussed planting a church. In March 2019, they begin six once a month preview services at Green Springs Elementary. The church officially launched September 15, 2019, as they begin weekly services. The Lord led the church to lease a building and in January of 2020 we moved to our current location.

HOW WE OPERATE

Connect, Grow, Serve, and Go are the four elements of the Cross Pathway and is how our church family walks together as a movement of truth, love, and community. From visiting a worship gathering, to growing in discipleship, to becoming a partner, to leading a ministry, to being sent out to plant future churches, our pathway serves as our strategic guide in making disciples of all nations.

In order to fulfill our mission, we create relevant pathways to equip people to:

• Connect to God and the church

• Grow to be like Christ in maturity and commitment

• Serve the Church and others using their gifts

• Go through outreach, evangelism, and missions

HOW WE SEE THE FUTURE

We are excited about the future! We envision Cross Church Kansas City to be a growing and healthy multi-congregational Apostolic church that saturates the greater Kansas City area with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We will accomplish this through planting daughter churches, campuses, and autonomous churches throughout the Kansas City area. Our vision is to see one hundred new Apostolic churches in the Greater Kansas City area by 2043. We see the future with YOU right alongside us!

LESSON 1 – THE BIBLE AND CREATION

WHY BELIEVE THE BIBLE?

  • The Bible is of God
    • 2 PETER 1:21- HOLY MEN OF GOD WERE MOVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
  • The Bible is God’s to humanity.
    • Two Timothy 3:16 – inspiration means “God breathed”
  • The Bible is the of God
    • We do not add to or take away from it:
      • Deuteronomy 4:2
      • Proverbs 30:6
      • Revelation 22:19
  • The preservation of God’s word (Psalms 12:6–7 and Luke 16:17)
    • We believe that the word of God is true, our faith lies in that these scriptures are factual and infallible.

THE OLD TESTAMENT

STRUCTURE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

  • 39 books
    • Covers 3,600 years of human history
  • 4 major sections:
  • The law (Pentateuch/torah) – 5 books
  • History – 12 books
  • Poetry & wisdom – 5 books (such as Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon)
  • Prophecy – 17 books
    • Major prophets (5 books): Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel
    • Minor prophets (12 books): Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

WHY THE OT MATTERS

    • Matthew 5:17 – Jesus, explained He did not come to destroy the law, but instead He came to fulfill it
  • Why study it?
    • Romans 15:4: “for whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning…

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The Old Testament is not only historical—it is instructional. It teaches us how God interacts with humanity, reveals the nature of sin, and shows the need for a savior. Every story, from Adam to Malachi, points toward Jesus Christ.
  • The Bible is God’s word, not man’s word about God.
  • God inspired and preserved the Bible through the holy spirit.
  • The Old Testament is divided into four sections: law, history, poetry, and prophecy.
  • Every part of the Old Testament points toward Jesus and God’s plan of redemption.
  • The Old Testament is still relevant today—it shows us the nature of sin and the need for salvation.

CREATION

GENESIS MEANS “BEGINNING”

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. – Genesis 1:1

This simple yet profound statement sets the tone for all of scripture. It reveals that God is eternal, existing before creation, and that all of creation originated from him. The creation story unfolds over seven days, each one representing a distinct phase in God’s creative process. Let us walk through each day of creation and examine how God’s power and wisdom are revealed.

DAY ONE

On the first day, God created .

“And God said, let there be light: and there was light.” – Genesis 1:1-5

God’s creation of light without a visible source (like the sun) shows that he is the true source of light and life. This aligns with the New Testament revelation that Jesus is the “light of the world” (John 8)

DAY TWO

““And God said, let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” – Genesis 1:6-8

On the second day, God created the .

The creation of the atmosphere prepared the earth for the ecosystem that would soon support life. It also reflects God’s order and precision in creation.

DAY THREE

“Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together… Let the dry land appear… Let the earth bring forth….” – Genesis 1:9-13

On the third day God called dry land earth and gathered the waters into seas. He created every plant to reproduce after it’s own kind.

This day underscores God’s ability to bring life from the earth and his provision for future generations. The abundance and variety of plant life also reflect God’s creativity and generosity.

DAY FOUR

“And God said, let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” – Genesis 1:14-19

On the fourth day God created the sun, moon, and stars.

Sun ruled the day and the moon ruled the night.

The sun and moon were created after the creation of light. This highlights that light exists because of God, not because of any physical source.

DAY FIVE

“And God said, let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.” – Genesis 1:20-23

God created the sea creatures and the birds of the air.

This day showcases God’s power and diversity in creation. The beauty and complexity of marine life and the flight of birds reflect God’s design and attention to detail.

DAY SIX

“Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind.” – Genesis 1:24-25

God created cattle, creeping things, and beasts of the earth. Each animal was created after its own kind, ensuring genetic stability and order in nature.

“Let us make man in our image…” – Genesis 1:26-27 & 2:7

Man was made from dust.

Being made in God’s image gives humanity a unique purpose and responsibility to reflect God’s character in the world.

DAY SEVEN

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work.” – Genesis 2:2-3

On this day, God rested.

The seventh day serves as a model for humanity’s need for rest and reflection. God established a pattern of work and rest that reflects balance and completeness.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • God’s  – Everything was created by the spoken word of God.
  • God’s  – Creation followed a specific and logical order, reflecting God’s nature of order and structure.
  • God’s  – The universe was created effortlessly by God’s word, showcasing His omnipotence.
  • God’s  – From the beginning, God provided all that was necessary for life and sustenance.
  • God’s with Humanity – The creation of mankind in His image shows that God desires a relationship with us.

THE WILL OF MAN AND JUDGEMENT

  • The gift of free will
    • Genesis 2:16-17 – do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
    • The fact that they had the ability to choose to eat of the tree is the example of free will.
  • The role of Satan
    • Genesis 3:1 Genesis 3:4-5
    • John 8:44 refers to Satan as the father of lies.
  • Eve’s mistake and Adam’s disobedience
    • Genesis 3:6 1 timothy 2:14
    • Even judged the tree based on:
      • Lust of the flesh – “good for food”
      • Lust of the eyes – “pleasant to the eyes”
      • The pride of life – “will make one wise”
  • The immediate consequences of sin
    • Genesis 3:7 Genesis 3:8 Genesis 3:12-13
    • They immediately felt: shame, fear, & guilt
  • God’s judgement and the curses
    • Genesis 3:14 Genesis 3:17-19
    • Genesis 3:16 Genesis 3:15
    • Satan: crawl on belly and eat dust
    • Eve: pain in childbirth and struggle with Adam
    • Adam: ground was cursed and would have to toil
  • God’s provision and mercy
    • Genesis 3:14 Genesis 3:16
    • God showed mercy – he made them coats of skin, because they became aware of their nakedness.
    • This act would point to the crucifixion of Jesus.
  • Expulsion from the garden
    • Genesis 3:24
    • God removed Adam and eve from the garden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life and living forever in their sinful state.
    • This final act was not of judgement, but of mercy, because otherwise humanity would have been condemned forever.
  • The story of the fall of man is one of the most critical events in human history. It marks the moment when sin entered the world and changed the relationship between God and humanity forever.
  • Understanding the fall of man helps us to understand why humanity struggles with sin, why death exists, and why we need salvation. The consequences of Adam and eve’s sin are still felt today, but God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ was already being set in motion from the very beginning.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sin always begins with doubt and deception – Satan’s strategy is to twist God’s word and create confusion.
  • Free will means – God allows us to choose, but our choices carry consequences.
  • Sin brings separation and – both spiritual and physical death were introduced by Adam’s sin.
  • God’s mercy is always – even in judgment, God provided a covering and a promise of redemption.
  • The promise of a – Jesus Christ would one day destroy the power of sin and death, restoring humanity’s relationship with God.

MESSENGER

In This Lesson

1. The Call of God

2. Preparation

3. It’s Time to Evangelize

Section 1 – The Call of God

Before you were born, God had a specific purpose for your life.

Psalm 139:13-16 “… I am fearfully and wonderfully made…All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (NIV)

His goal is to get you to the place where you realize that He has a purpose for you, and you bring yourself into focus with God’s plan (I Cor. 12:27).

John 15:16 “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit…”

Each believer possesses a unique blend of talents, background and personality. It is not a coincidence that you are gifted in certain areas, or that you have experienced certain hardships (Rom. 8:28).

God has not only saved you, but He has also called you to develop into a spiritual soldier to fight for lost souls! You may play any number of roles in God’s army, but know that God has a job just for you.

However, this does not force your hand. Each believer must individually

choose whether or not they will answer the call.

Isaiah 6:8 “…I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me”

Notice that God did not call a particular individual in this verse. A task needed to be accomplished, and Isaiah volunteered. In this regard, Isaiah made himself available and answered the call of God.

(MULTILINE)

What is this call?

The call of God is to Evangelize!

Evangelize – to share the gospel with the intent of saving souls.

Jesus issued one final command before His ascension. The kingdom of God was to be preached across the entire world. It was His last and most important command.

Matthew 28:19-20 “…go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…and teaching them…” (NIV)

Once the gospel was preached throughout the earth, Jesus promised to return for His church (Matt. 24:14). The call for soul winners was one of the only prayer requests of Jesus (Luke 10:2).

1. What is the value of a soul? How much would you be willing to give in order to lead an individual to salvation (Matt. 16:26)? Oh, that we had a deeper burden for our lost friends and family!

2. How much time are you giving to prayer and study? Are you investing in spiritual books and materials? Is there a hunger in your life to find and fulfill God’s call? Are you focused? What do you have a desire to do?

3. If you do not know, could it be that you are too involved in other things, leaving little time to focus on God’s calling upon your life?

(MULTILINE)

Section 2 – Preparation

Just as a new job requires orientation and training, so must the new believer spend time preparing to answer the call (I Pet. 2:2). The value of God’s call is reflected by the time and energy you place into preparation.

I Timothy 4:16 “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them…in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee”

How do I prepare for the call of God?

The believer can take immediate and ongoing steps toward spiritual

development and maturity. The following are vital keys to effective leadership, and will serve as valuable tools in fulfilling the call of God upon your life.

1. A Relationship with God – quality time in fellowship with the Creator will enable us to lead and influence others. Spiritual gifts and open doors are birthed through a personal relationship with God.

2. Attitude –in a face-to-face conversation, you are judged by your physical demeanor and facial expressions in addition to your words. How you say something is as important as what you are saying.

Therefore, our attitudes must be right. The attitude of joy is the strength of the believer (Neh. 8:10, Ps. 16:11, I Pet. 1:8). Display an attitude of joy in all that you do. Others are watching closely.

3. Charisma – the 1st Century church at Jerusalem was well received by many in their local community. As a result, new believers were born into the kingdom of God on a daily basis (Acts 2:47). People are drawn to leaders who encourage, show appreciation, forgive quickly and listen carefully.

If people are not currently drawn to you, you can change this!

• Learn to smile, and smile often. A smile relaxes others.

• Introduce yourself. Even a quick hello is valuable.

• Ask others about their life. People are often ready and willing to share their goals, events and dreams.

4. Skill – are you developing yourself? Are you studying the Word of God? Ask God to give you wisdom (Jam. 1:5), then put your prayer into action by studying to show yourself approved (II Tim. 2:15).

“Success is where preparation and opportunity meet” – John Maxwell

5. Spiritual Sensitivity – a soul-winner must be able to perceive the attitudes, feelings and circumstances of others. This cannot be learned from a book, but can only be obtained through time spent in prayer with the Lord.i

6. Anointing – an individual is anointed when God’s presence and power flows out of their words, thoughts, actions and prayers. It is God’s preferred method by which He releases His life changing power. Anointing enables us to complete the mission (Luke 4:18).

(MULTILINE)

Section 3 – It’s Time to Evangelize

The commission of Christ, the vision of your pastor, and the cry of the Spirit are united in purpose: we MUST reach our world with the gospel! The eternal destinies of family, friends and strangers hang in the balance.

1. A witness shares what they have seen, heard, experienced – and therefore know – about a situation. In His infinite wisdom, God has chosen us to be His witnesses (Acts 22:15, Mark 16:15).

Acts 1:8 “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…you will be my witnesses…to the ends of the earth” (NIV)

2. Evangelism means that saints will no longer attend church for selfish reasons alone. When a visitor walks through the doors of the sanctuary, the saints must welcome them with open arms.

3. Scripture urges believers to share the gospel clearly, fearlessly, and respectfully whenever opportunities arise (Eph. 6:19-20).

I Peter 3:15 “…be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you… the reason for the hope that you have…do this with gentleness and respect” (NIV)

How do I evangelize?

Evangelism can take many forms. Discover the method that works for you and stick with it.

1. Outreach may be through:

a. One-on-one conversations

b. Teaching bible studies

c. Passing out church cards

d. Bringing friends of your children to Sunday School

e. Volunteering in community outreach

f. Ministering to inmates

g. Organizing food drives

h. Assisting in a daughter work

i. Cleaning the church

j. …and many more

2. Either directly – or as part of a larger initiative – you are engaging your time, talents and energy into evangelism. There is no higher calling for the saint of God!

Colossians 4:2-5 “Devote yourselves to prayer…that God may open a door… make the most of every opportunity” (NIV)

3. The church of Jesus Christ is compared to a body with many members. Each member must communicate with the head of the body (I Cor. 12:13-23) for his assignment.

Some members will be assigned to the front lines (Paul planted), while others must care for the development and training of newly won souls (Apollos watered), with full assurance that God will bless their efforts (I Cor. 3:6).

(MULTILINE)

What is evangelism about?

Evangelism is about…

• …People – we must be patient with individuals, allowing the seed of truth to germinate and grow over time. Evangelism is not a one-time event. It is a process.

• …Teamwork – we do not have to win souls by ourselves. Soul winning is the combined effort of many unified believers.

• …Eternity – a single soul is worth more than the riches of the entire world (Matt. 16:26). Every man, woman and child is priceless!ii

Are there examples of evangelism in Scripture?

Scripture contains many New Testament accounts of evangelism. In fact, the approach to evangelism is as versatile as the personalities who deliver its message. Let us examine a few occurrences.

• Preaching (Acts 2:14-41) – The Apostle Peter preached with anointing and conviction on the Day of Pentecost. His method of evangelism was through the preaching of the gospel.

• Teaching and Discussion (Acts 17:1-4) – The Apostle Paul taught in the synagogue. He explained and proved that Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. His method of evangelism was through the teaching and discussion of the gospel.

• A Personal Testimony (John 9:1-25) – Jesus restored the sight of a man who was blind from birth. When Pharisees confronted the man, he simply shared his miraculous, life-changing testimony.

• An Invitation (John 4:6-10) – Jesus revealed His role as the Messiah to a Samaritan woman near Sychar. To start up a conversation, Jesus invited the woman to give him a drink from a nearby well. His method of evangelism began with an invitation.

• A Miracle (Luke 5:1-11) – Jesus wished to demonstrate His power to Simon and his fellow fisherman. Despite a long night of unsuccessful fishing, Jesus challenged them to launch back out to sea and let down their nets. The resulting catch of fish was astonishing. His method of evangelism began with a miracle. iii

Regardless of the method used, the call of God is to share the gospel. Of these illustrations, perhaps the most effective initial method of soul-winning is to share your personal testimony.

(MULTILINE)

How do I develop and share my testimony?

People argue many things, but they cannot argue with a personal testimony (John 9:25). Sharing what God has done for you is one of the most effective soul-winning methods a believer possesses. Your testimony is captivating, inoffensive and indisputable.

To understand how to share your testimony, observe the following steps:

1. Write it down – consider the state of your life before you experienced salvation (Eph. 4:22). Recall the events that led you to the truth. What motivated you then (fear, sickness, pain, knowledge, etc.)? What motivates you now? How different is your life after experiencing salvation? Has God ever healed you? Putting your testimony on paper will help you remember what to share when opportunities arise.

2. Pray for opportunities to share – If you will pray daily for opportunities, God will divinely orchestrate connections with the right individuals at the right time (Jam. 5:16). People are ready to hear your testimony, if you are willing to share! They may even ask without warning, so be ready! (I Pet. 3:15)

3. Understand their situation – Often, the best way to begin sharing your testimony is to first understand the individual’s current circumstances: Are they battling an illness? Are they living in fear? Do they feel that life has no purpose?

People must know that you care enough about them to understand their situation. Listen and relate to them first (I Cor. 9:20-22).

4. Share your testimony – after listening to their circumstances and establishing a connection, find a similar point that you struggled with (before salvation) and use that as a bridge to share your personal testimony. At that point, they will feel that you have something to offer them. They will be willing to listen because you fought those same battles and found an answer.

5. Include the gospel – Remember, your testimony is merely the door through which you can ultimately share the good news (Rom. 6:3-7). Let them see how much it means to you and how life-changing it is to be born again!

6. Don’t be discouraged – If you share your testimony and they respond in faith, great! However, the precious seed of truth often takes time to germinate and grow (I Cor. 3:6). If the individual does not immediately respond, you have still answered the call of God. Rest assured, God will use that testimony to draw on their heart (Isa. 55:11, Acts 17:27, John 12:32).

CONCLUSION: Answer the call, prepare yourself, and become a soul winning, active, passionate member of the kingdom of God. We have a job to do. Let’s do it with all our might! (Ecc. 9:10)

–

Porque yo ya estoy para ser sacrificado, y el tiempo de mi partida está cercano.

2 Timothy 4:7 NASB95 and RVR60

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;

–

He peleado la buena batalla, he acabado la carrera, he guardado la fe.

2 Timothy 4:8 NASB95 and RVR60

in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

–

Por lo demás, me está guardada la corona de justicia, la cual me dará el Señor, juez justo, en aquel día; y no sólo a mí, sino también a todos los que aman su venida.

In This Lesson

1. Ministry Defined

2. The Goal of Ministry

3. Ministry Purposes

4. Ministry at Cross Church

5. Discovering how God has shaped us for ministry

WHAT IS MINISTRY?

DEFINITION: (Greek “diakonos” = “to serve”)

MINISTRY IS USING WHATEVER GOD HAS GIVEN ME TO SERVE HIM AND THE NEEDS OF OTHERS.

(MULTILINE)

THE GOAL OF OUR MINISTRY

Eph. 4:11-16 (NIV) God wants to use me to serve.

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Eph. 4:11-13)

“There are different kinds of service to God, but it is the same Lord we are serving. The Holy Spirit displays God’s power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church. All of you together are the one Body of Christ and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.” (1 Cor. 12:27)

(MULTILINE)

MINISTRY PURPOSES

We seek to achieve the goal of our ministry by fulfilling these 5 purposes of the church:

1. To God’s Word (Evangelism)

…to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, Eph. 3:10 (NKJV)

2. To God’s Family (Fellowship)

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. Gal. 6:2, 10 (NKJV)

3. To God’s Presence (Worship)

Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.'” Matt. 4:10 (NKJV)

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 (NKJV)

4. To God’s People (Discipleship)

Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, Hebrews 6:1 (NKJV)

…but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18 (NKJV)

5. To God’s Love (Ministry)

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

John 13:35 (NKJV)

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 1 Cor. 12:27 (NKJV)

WE HELP PEOPLE ACHIEVE MATURITY

BY ATTENDING TO FIVE KINDS OF NEEDS

To people’s  spiritual  needs.

…God reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Cor. 5:18

We proclaim Christ, counseling and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. Col. 1:28,29

To people’s needs.

(God says) I was hungry and you fed me…thirsty and you gave me a drink…needed clothes and you clothed me…sick and you cared for me…in prison and you visited me…

Whenever you have done this to the least person, you did it to me. Matt. 25:35-36, 40

If, as my representative, you give even a cup of cold water to a little child, you will surely be rewarded. Matt. 10:42 (LB)

To people’s needs.

…Warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with all. 1 Thess. 5:14 (GN)

To people’s needs.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. Rom. 12:2

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Phil 2:5

To people’s needs.

Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God’s grace. Cor. 1:12

1. What We Believe…ABOUT MINISTRY at Cross Church

• Salvation in Jesus Christ automatically includes a call to ministry. Every believer is created, saved, called, gifted, authorized, and commanded to minister.

• Ministry is the heart of the Christian life. (Matt. 20:28)

• How God made me determines what He intends for me to do. God has uniquely shaped each individual for a specific ministry.

• God has given all his children gifts that can be developed and used in ministry. Everyone is a “10” in some area. Everyone has something to offer. Developing and using your gifts is an act of good stewardship and of service.

• You discover your gifts through ministry, instead of discovering your ministry by identifying your gifts.

• The evidence of the right match between my “shape” and my ministry is fulfillment and results.

• Salvation and maturity are prerequisites for some areas of ministry. For certain areas, we require the new birth and significant commitment before serving in those ministries at Cross Church.

2. What We Believe…ABOUT THE BODY OF CHRIST

• God intends for ministry to be performed through the context of the local church. Membership includes a commitment to ministry.

• The Holy Spirit has provided our church body with all the spiritually gifted people needed to do everything He wants done. Our task is to discover, enlist, train, and support these people in ministry.

• The church is to operate on the basis of spiritual gifts, rather than elected office. We do not elect people to ministries. “A man’s gift makes room for him…” Prov. 18:16 (NAS)

• The church is a family, not a business; an organism, not an organization. Therefore, we streamline the structure in order to maximize ministry and minimize maintenance. We do not bury ministries under procedures.

• The mobilization of every member as a minister is the key to balanced growth of the church.

• The greater good of the whole Body must always take priority over the needs of any single ministry. There is no place for “turfism” in God’s Family.

3. What We Believe…ABOUT THE ROLE OF PASTORS

• The equipping of the members for ministry is the number one priority of the pastoral staff. The people are the ministers and the pastors are the administrators. (Eph. 4:11-12)

• The objective of Cross Church is to mobilize and equip an army of ministers who are maximizing their unique gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences in a meaningful place of service through our church.

• Every member deserves personal assistance in discovering a meaningful place of ministry.

• Those involved in ministry are entitled to competent leadership from the staff. Therefore, every ministry is assigned a competent leader who is committed to the success of that ministry.

• Each department leaders or director is to provide training, encouragement, guidance, feedback and resources to the ministers under his or her care.

4. What We Believe…ON DIVERSITY OF MINISTRY

• Any person who desires to minister on the platform or in the highest levels of ministry must agree to and sign Guidelines for Leadership And Public Ministry.

• Every ministry must fulfill the mission of the church or we don’t do it. Our mission to “To make and multiply fully trained followers of Jesus.”

• Ministries have seasons. If a ministry isn’t meeting a need anymore, we will give it a decent burial. There are no sacred cows!

• Most ministries require a one-year commitment, but we allow people to change ministries gracefully, without guilt. We don’t lock people in permanently.

• Only official ministries of Cross Church under staff supervision are given publicity.

• Your primary ministry commitment should be in the area where you are gifted. Your secondary ministry includes serving in any other area of the Body where you are needed.

• You are not ready for ministry, until you are willing to serve anywhere.

I am not who I think I am

I am not who you think I am

But I really am who God says I am!

DISCOVERING HOW GOD HAS SHAPED ME FOR MINISTRY

HOW HAS GOD SHAPED ME?

“Your hands formed and shaped me…” Job 10:8a (GN)

God has been molding and shaping you for ministry since you were born. In fact, God started uniquely shaping even before you were born!

“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous…You were there while I was being formed… You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe.” Psalm 139:14-16 (LB)

“What right do you have, a human being, to cross-examine God? The pot has no right to say to the potter: Why did you make me this shape? A potter can do what he likes with the clay!” Rom. 9:20-21

MINISTRY IS DETERMINED BY SEVERAL FACTORS

“There are different kinds of SPIRITUAL GIFTS but the same Spirit gives them. There are different WAYS OF SERVING, but the same Lord is served. There are different ABILITIES to perform service, but the same God gives ability to everyone for their service. The Spirit’s presence is shown IN SOME WAY in each one, for the good of all.” 1 Cor. 12:4-7 (GN)

Paul’s Spiritual Gifts

“And of this gospel I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.” 2 Tim. 1:11

Paul’s Heart

“My constant ambition has been to preach the gospel where the name of Christ was previously unknown, and to avoid building on another man’s foundation.” Rom. 15:20 (Ph)

“For God, who was at work in the ministry of Peter as an apostle to the Jews, was also at work in my ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles.” Gal. 2:8

“Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus…” Acts 20:24 (LB)

Paul’s Ability

“…Paul went to see them, and stayed and worked with them, because he earned his living by making tents, just as they did. He debated in the synagogues every Sabbath, trying to convince both Jews and Gentiles.” Acts 18:2b-4 (GN)

Paul’s Personality

“For you have heard of my past…I persecuted the church with fanatical zeal…and did my best to destroy it…I was ahead of most of my contemporaries in the Jewish religion, and had a boundless enthusiasm…” Gal. 1:13-14 (Ph)

Paul’s Experiences

• HIS SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

Three years maturing in Arabia (Gal. 1:18) Special vision from God (2 Cor. 12:2-7)

• HIS PAINFUL EXPERIENCES

“…I have been in prison more times…near death often…been whipped five times with 39 lashes by the Jews and three times by the Romans … once stoned … I’ve been in three shipwrecks … and once spent 24 hours in the water … In my travels I’ve been in danger from floods … robbers … enemies … wild animals and false friends … I’ve served long hours without sleep or food or shelter or even clothing…” 2 Cor. 11:23-27

“To keep me from becoming conceited because of these great revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan, to torment me.” 2 Cor. 12:7

• HIS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES

Acts 22:3 NLT

3 Then Paul said, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, and I was brought up and educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel. As his student, I was carefully trained in our Jewish laws and customs. I became very zealous to honor God in everything I did, just like all of you today.

The Wisdom of the Magi

Matthew 2:11 NASB95 and RVR60

We Are The Church

1 Peter 2:6 NASB95 and RVR60

For this is contained in Scripture: “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

Por lo cual también contiene la Escritura: He aquí, pongo en Sion la principal piedra del ángulo, escogida, preciosa; Y el que creyere en él, no será avergonzado.

1 Peter 2:7 NASB95 and RVR60

This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone,”

Para vosotros, pues, los que creéis, él es precioso; pero para los que no creen, La piedra que los edificadores desecharon, Ha venido a ser la cabeza del ángulo;

1 Peter 2:8 NASB95 and RVR60

and, “A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.

y: Piedra de tropiezo, y roca que hace caer, porque tropiezan en la palabra, siendo desobedientes; a lo cual fueron también destinados.

1 Peter 2:9 NASB95 and RVR60

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Mas vosotros sois linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, nación santa, pueblo adquirido por Dios, para que anunciéis las virtudes de aquel que os llamó de las tinieblas a su luz admirable;

Because God has made us the church we must proclaim His praises.

CONTEXT

• It has been said that there are three rules of hermeneutics:

1. Context

2. Context

3. Context

• Context rules

Literary Context

• Definition – Literary context is the set of words, sentences and paragraphs that surround and relate to the passage being studied.

• Main Idea

• Every passage in the Bible connects to the verses before and after it. (Wisdom literature is often an exception, as well as some OT law and prophecy)

• When we read we must ask “Why is this passage here”?

• Exploring the main idea with two metaphors

• Ladder

• Conversation

Literary Context Principles

1. Interpret single verses in light of their immediate context. (John 12:32)

John 12:32

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33  This he said, signifying what death he should die.

2. Interpret paragraphs and episodes in light of the paragraphs or events around them. (Rom 12:17-21)

Rom 12:17-21

17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

3. Try to determine why your text belongs precisely where it is and no where else. (Luke 15:1ff)

Luke 15:1ff

1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

4. Look for thematic statements that introduce or interpret an entire section. (Judges 2:10-19)

Judges 2:10–19 NKJV

10 When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.

11 Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; 12 and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless, the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. 19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.

5. Look for repeated words or phrases. (Rev 17:14; 19:16)

Rev 17:14; 19:16

14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

6 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

6. Locate your text in the purpose of its section and the whole book. (Gen. 12:1-3)

Genesis 12:1–3 “1 Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.””

Historical Context

• Historical context is the culture, customs, languages, beliefs, and history of the author, his subjects and his original audience.

• To get the most from our Bible reading learn to use every form of context.

Contrasting Methods of Literary and Historical Contexts

Historical Context Principles

1. The more we know about the world of the Bible, the better we understand the Bible itself.

2. To evaluate the relationship between a writer and his readers, look for pointed questions and objections, sharp rebukes, and terms of endearment.

3. In historical books we need to understand the cultures of the people who acted out the dramas of the Bible.

Questions To Ask

1. Who?

a. Who wrote it?

b. Who is reading it?

c. Who is it about?

2. When?

a. When was it written?

b. OT or NT?

c. If OT are the people faithful or not?

d. If NT is it before or after the resurrection?

3. Where?

a. What land and culture are we in?

4. What and Why?

a. What did he want to teach?

b. What was the goal of writing?

c. What is the main theme?

5. How?

a. Are there any unusual methods of writing?

Matthew 25:1–13 NKJV

1 “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

6 “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

11 “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
