“The Glory of Servanthood”
Philippians 2:1-11
Scripture Focus (Philippians 2:1-11) – “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, [2] complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. [3] Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. [4] Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. [5] Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, [6] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [9] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
I. The Foundation for Our Servanthood (1)
A. Because we have been helped in Christ (1a) – “So if there is any encouragement in Christ…”
B. Because we have been rescued in loved (1b) – “…any comfort from love…”
C. Because we are partners with Holy Spirit (1c) – “…any participation (koinonia) in the Spirit…” D. Because we have experienced the tenderness of God (1d) – “…any affection and sympathy…”
II. The Outflow of Our Servanthood (2-4)
A. Christians prioritize intentional unity (2) – “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”
B. Christians value and honor others (3) – “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit humility count others more significant than yourselves {our appreciation}.”
C. Christians pursue practical love (4) – “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
1 Peter 4:10 – “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
III. The Power for Our Servanthood (5-11)
A. We can think like Jesus (5) – “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…”
B. We can empty ourselves like Jesus (6-7) – “…who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
C. We can submit like Jesus (8a) – “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death…”
D. We can sacrifice like Jesus (8b) – “…even death on a cross…”
E. We can prevail like Jesus (9) – “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name…”
F. We can wait like Jesus (10-11) – “So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Matthew 20:25-28
“Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. [26] It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant (Diakonos), [27] and whoever would be first among you must be your slave (Doulos), [28] even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
