2025-09-28 Stand Firm in the Faith

September 28, 2025   /   The Rev. Brook Batchelor   /   All Souls Anglican Church

“On July 19, Angel Stadium was at full capacity with a crowd of over 45,000, and we ended the night with more than 6,500 professions of faith.

“On August 16, we baptized 2,100 people at the 3rd Annual Jesus Revolution Baptism. That means we’ve baptized a total of 10,000 people through our church and outreach baptism events—in just two years.

“I have to tell you, even at the peak of the Jesus Movement 50 years ago, we never saw anything like this. God is clearly at work, and I believe we’re seeing true signs of revival.”

2 Timothy 3:1–5 (NLT)

You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money.

They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.

5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

2 Timothy 3:12–17 (NLT)

12 Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

13 But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived. 14 But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.

Luke 6:27–31 (NLT)

27 “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.30 Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back.31 Do to others as you would like them to do to you.”

2 Timothy 3:12–17 (NLT)

15 You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

2 Timothy 4:1–5 (NLT)

I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom:

2 Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.

3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths.

5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

·        Jesus was well aware that people would be opposing him as we gather from today’s Gospel reading

Luke 16:19–31 (ESV)

31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”

Hebrews 12:2–3 (NLT)

2 We [keep] our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. 3 Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (NIV)

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14  Do everything in love.
