Ruth 2 | Fields of Grace

Big Idea: God’s providence intersects with our faithful initiative and leads us to receive what we don’t deserve.
v.1 Before Ruth ever steps into a field, God has already placed Boaz in the story (sovereignty).
V.2 Naomi is trapped in her grief. Ruth: A pattern of initiative taking and submission.
- God meets moving feet (V.3). What if Naomi stayed in Moab? We have a role:
If God’s providence is like the wind, we are like a sailor on a sailboat. 3 options:
- – We do nothing and we’ll drift with life’s currents.
- – Depend on our own strength and row and it will be exhausting.
- Partnership– we can raise the sail and steer carefully according to the master map.
V.4-7 We see Boaz and Ruth’s character and the moment everything changes.
ḥesed– Hebrew: steadfast love, loyal kindness, covenant faithfulness, or compassionate generosity beyond obligation. Grace/mercy all rolled into one.
- God works when we return (V.8-16): God is always ready to work, but sometimes we get in the way. The miracle began with Shuv, returning.
- You can’t out–Hesed God (v.15-17)– It’s a hidden law of the kingdom. Hesed multiplies.
Challenge: How can we practice hesed type practical loving kindness and structured generosity?
- God works in ordinary moments: Behind the expression of daily living out God’s kingdom
principles of hesed, God is quietly working redemption.
Questions for GROW Groups
- How have you experienced “God-o-inces” in your life (seemingly random events that later revealed God’s providence) and what steps of faith preceded them?
- In what ways are you currently “stuck in Moab” like Naomi, and what would it look like to “shuv” (return/repent) to a place where God’s blessings can flow?
- Reflect on the sailboat analogy: Are you more prone to passivity, pride, or partnership with the Holy Spirit in your spiritual growth? Why, and how can you shift toward partnership?
- How can practicing hesed (steadfast love beyond obligation) in your daily relationships multiply kindness (as seen in Ruth’s generosity toward Naomi leading to Boaz’s response)?
- In ordinary moments without miracles, how has God worked redemption in your life, and what initiative can you take this week to “glean” in fields of grace?
Family Corner
In Ruth 2, Ruth takes brave steps to gather food in a stranger’s field, where she unexpectedly finds kindness and protection from Boaz, showing how God guides us when we trust Him and take action. This story reminds families that even in hard times, God’s love provides for us in surprising ways, just like He turns Naomi’s sadness into hope through everyday faithfulness.
Questions to Ask Kiddos:
- What do you think Ruth felt like when she went to pick up grain in a potentially dangerous new place, and how did God surprise her with help from Boaz?
- Can you think of a time when something “just happened” in a good way, like maybe finding a friend or getting help, and how might that be God working like in Ruth’s story?
