There Is More: Freedom
February 15, 2026
There is a freedom we accept… and a freedom Jesus gives.
Matthew 14:27 (NIV)
Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Jesus speaks while the storm is still crashing.
He doesn’t wait for the waves to calm down before He re-establishes who’s in charge.
Storms don’t always change what’s true… they change what feels true.
And fear grows when the storm gets promoted to authority.
The wind is chaotic but it’s not Lord.
Freedom begins when Jesus becomes the final word again.
John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free… stand firm… and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Being forgiven doesn’t automatically mean you’re living free.
Freedom can be given and then slowly surrendered again through fear, comfort, and control.
Matthew 14:28–29 (NIV)
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
Peter doesn’t ask Jesus to come into the boat.
He asks Jesus to call him out of it.
That’s not Peter being dramatic, that’s Peter refusing to settle for “safe” when Jesus is offering “freedom.”
Faith in this scripture isn’t confidence or Peter’s personality.
Faith is treating Jesus’ word as more reliable than your surroundings.
The boat becomes the picture of what we settle for.
It starts as obedience (Jesus put them in it) but it can become a prison if we trust it more than Him.
The boat is whatever you rely on to feel secure when you’re not actively trusting Jesus.
Some boats are sinful.
Some boats look normal.
Some boats look successful.
Some boats may even look spiritual.
• substance / alcohol
• porn / flirting / attention / approval
• screens / scrolling / streaming / gaming
• control / perfection / money / achievements
• avoidance / comfort / sarcasm / anger
The boat can keep you afloat… but it won’t move you toward Jesus.
The boat is safe… but it’s not freedom.
Matthew 14:30–31 (NIV)
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
The wind didn’t suddenly show up but Peter’s focus changed.
What you focus on doesn’t just affect your feelings… it shapes your decisions.
Whatever you stare at starts steering you.
1 John 2:15–17
The “world” is a system competing for your trust:
lust of the flesh (I need relief now)
lust of the eyes (if I had that, I’d be okay)
pride of life (I must protect my image / control my life)
Compromise is rarely instant.
In Matthew it looks like “beginning to sink.”
Small negotiations. Small delays. Small retreats back to the boat.
But Peter does the most important thing in the story, and he stops managing and starts surrendering.
“Lord, save me.”
Jesus responds immediately.
He doesn’t shame Peter but He reaches for him.
There is a freedom we accept… and a freedom Jesus gives.
Accepted freedom is survival, staying functional, staying comfortable, staying in control.
Jesus’ freedom is surrender, trusting Him even when the wind is still blowing.
Practical Next Steps
Every Boat Has A Name.
What is your go-to security when you’re not actively trusting Jesus? Call it out, bring it to the light.
Take The “Word”.
Obedience comes before feelings change. For Peter it was “Come”. What has Jesus been calling you to do? You may not understand everything but choose one thing you have needed to be obedient in.
Reach For Help.
Don’t wait till your spiraling to have a plan for when the storm shows up again. If we don’t rise to intention, we fall to pattern.
“What’s my next obedient step?”
“Who do I need to call?”
The deepest freedom isn’t behavior change, it’s changing who you belong to.
There is more.
