James: Faith on the Ground

Week 5: When Your Tongue’s Not Tied

James 3:1-12        February 8, 2026

: to God, to us

James 3:1-2

Words demand a response from God. (see Matt. 12:36-37)

James 3:3-4

Words direct where people go.

James 3:5-6

Words destroy what is good. (Proverbs 16:27; 26:21)

THINK: Is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind?

James 3:7-8

Words defy my control. (Psalm 140:3)

James 3:9-12

Words display who I am. (Luke 6:43-46)

Good News: What I can’t control, God can!

(John 15:5; Psalm 51:10; Ezekiel 36:26)

Before I say another word:

ASK FOR FORGIVENESS (1 John 1:9; Romans 7:24-25)

   PAUSE (Jas. 1:19-21; Prov. 10:19; 17:27-28; 21:23; 29:11,20; Ps. 141:3)

When I speak my next word:

   SPEAK LIFE-GIVING WORDS (Proverbs 12:18; 2 Timothy 2:14)

   BE GENEROUS (Ephesians 4:29)

“Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;

keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3)
