The Jesus Story – Wk. 13: Peter’s Confession
February 8, 2026 / First Baptist Church ElginDay 1 – The Question That Changes Everything
Summary
There are moments in life when everything hinges on a single question. In Caesarea Philippi—surrounded by pagan temples and false gods—Jesus turns to His disciples and asks, “Who do you say I am?” This is not a trivia question. It is the question of eternity. Culture may speculate. Religion may debate. But salvation begins when the question becomes personal. Who is Jesus to you?
Read
-
Matthew 16:13–17
-
John 6:44
-
Romans 10:9–10
Background
Caesarea Philippi was a region known for idol worship and pagan shrines. It was a borderland—geographically and spiritually. Against that backdrop of competing loyalties, Jesus presses His disciples for clarity. Public opinion had many answers—prophet, teacher, Elijah—but Peter confesses, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus immediately clarifies that this confession did not arise from human reasoning. It was revealed by the Father.
Key Words
Messiah (Christos) – The Anointed One; God’s promised deliverer and King.
Revelation (apokalypsis concept) – An unveiling; truth made known by God that could not be discovered by human effort.
Draw (helkō – John 6:44) – To pull or attract powerfully; a divine initiative in salvation.
Theological Truths
-
Saving faith is a gift of divine revelation.
John Calvin wrote, “Faith is not a distant view but a warm embrace of Christ, which the Spirit kindles in our hearts.” -
No one comes to Christ apart from God’s initiating grace.
R.C. Sproul said, “Regeneration precedes faith. We believe because God first makes us alive.”
Questions for Reflection
-
When you think about Jesus, are you repeating what others say, or do you personally confess Him as Messiah and Son of God?(MULTILINE)
-
How has God revealed Christ to you through Scripture, prayer, or conviction of sin?(MULTILINE)
-
Who in your life needs you to pray that the Father would reveal Jesus to them?(MULTILINE)
Application
Spend intentional time in prayer today asking God to deepen your understanding of who Jesus truly is. Pray specifically for one lost person by name, asking the Father to reveal Christ to them.
Day 2 – The Rock and the Living Stones
Summary
Jesus is not building His church on personalities, platforms, or preferences. He is building it on Himself. Christ is the Rock—the foundation that cannot be shaken. And by grace, we become living stones in His spiritual house. The church is not ours to reinvent; it is His to establish and sustain.

-
Matthew 16:18
-
1 Corinthians 3:11
-
1 Peter 2:4–6
Background
Jesus tells Peter, “On this rock I will build My church.” Throughout Scripture, God alone is called the Rock. Peter himself later clarifies that Jesus is the cornerstone, and believers are living stones built upon Him. The church exists because Christ establishes it, owns it, and preserves it.
Key Words
Rock (petra) – A massive, foundational rock formation.
Church (ekklesia) – The called-out assembly; those gathered by God through Christ.
Cornerstone (akrogōniaios) – The chief stone aligning and supporting the entire structure.
Theological Truths
-
Christ alone is the foundation of the church.
Charles Spurgeon wrote, “The church rests not on man, but on Christ. The gates of hell shall not prevail against Him.” -
Believers are sovereignly placed into God’s redemptive structure.
John Murray said, “Union with Christ is the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation.”
Questions for Reflection
-
Is your spiritual life built on Christ Himself or on church culture, tradition, or experience?(MULTILINE)
-
How are you actively functioning as a “living stone” in Christ’s church?(MULTILINE)
-
What step of obedience could strengthen your commitment to Christ’s body?(MULTILINE)
Application
Identify one tangible way to strengthen your participation in Christ’s church this week—serve, disciple someone, or initiate a gospel conversation.
Day 3 – The Necessary Cross
Summary
Peter wanted the crown without the cross. He embraced Jesus as Messiah but resisted the suffering Savior. Yet Scripture says it was necessary for Christ to suffer, die, and rise again. The cross was not a detour. It was the plan. Without the cross, there is no church. Without the cross, there is no salvation.
Read
-
Matthew 16:21–23
-
Isaiah 53:4–6
-
Acts 4:10–12
Background
Immediately after Peter’s confession, Jesus begins to explain His coming suffering. The word “necessary” signals divine purpose. Peter rebukes Jesus, unable to reconcile glory with sacrifice. But redemption required substitution. God’s eternal plan centered on the atoning death of His Son.
Key Words
Necessary (dei) – Divinely required; according to God’s sovereign plan.
Suffer (paschō) – To endure pain or affliction.
Cornerstone – The essential stone upon which everything rests.
Theological Truths
-
The cross was eternally ordained.
Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “The cross was not an accident of history; it was the purpose of God from eternity.” -
There is no salvation apart from Christ’s atoning death.
J.C. Ryle wrote, “Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.”
Questions for Reflection
-
Do you fully trust that Christ’s suffering was for your personal redemption?(MULTILINE)
-
In what ways are you tempted to prefer comfort and success over obedience and sacrifice?(MULTILINE)
-
How does meditating on the cross deepen your gratitude and fuel your mission?(MULTILINE)
Application
Read Isaiah 53 slowly today. Thank Jesus specifically for bearing your sin. Let gratitude move you toward obedience.
Day 4 – Supernatural Faith, Active Obedience
Summary
Revealed faith must become lived faith. Once the Father opens our eyes to see Christ, our lives must reflect that revelation. True confession produces discipleship. We build our lives on Christ by hearing His Word and doing it.
Read
-
Matthew 7:24–25
-
James 1:22
-
Colossians 2:6–7
Background
Throughout Scripture, rock imagery is tied to obedience. The wise man builds on the rock by acting on Jesus’ words. Faith is not passive agreement; it is active trust expressed in obedience.
Key Words
Disciple (mathētēs) – A learner and follower.
Foundation (themelios) – That which supports and stabilizes a structure.
Obedience (hypakoē) – Hearing under authority; responsive submission.
Theological Truths
-
Faith without obedience is incomplete.
John Stott wrote, “Authentic Christianity is not merely believing in Christ but belonging to Him.” -
Christ-centered obedience produces stability.
A.W. Pink said, “The more we are subject to Christ’s authority, the more secure our lives become.”
Questions for Reflection
-
What specific teaching of Jesus do you need to obey more fully right now?(MULTILINE)
-
How consistent is your time in Scripture and prayer?(MULTILINE)
-
Is your spiritual growth intentional or accidental?(MULTILINE)
Application
Commit to a specific daily time in God’s Word this week. Ask the Spirit not only to inform you but to transform you.
Day 5 – Built for His Glory and His Mission
Summary
Jesus is building something unstoppable—His church. The gates of Hades will not prevail. And astonishingly, He uses us. Living stones. Redeemed sinners. Saved by grace. The church exists because Christ died and rose, and it advances when believers proclaim that truth.
Read
-
Matthew 16:18
-
2 Corinthians 5:18–20
-
1 Peter 2:9
Background
After confessing Christ, the disciples would soon be sent to proclaim Him. The church’s foundation is Christ’s finished work; its mission is to declare that work to the world.
Key Words
Gates of Hades – A symbol of death’s power; defeated by Christ.
Ambassadors – Representatives sent with authority.
Holy Priesthood – A people set apart to declare God’s glory.
Theological Truths
-
The church advances through Christ’s authority.
John Piper wrote, “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” -
Salvation creates ambassadors.
Charles Hodge said, “The church is the great instrument by which the gospel is propagated.”
Questions for Reflection
-
Who is God prompting you to share Christ with this week?(MULTILINE)
-
How does your relationship with Jesus fuel your engagement in His mission?(MULTILINE)
-
Are you actively discipling someone or helping another believer grow?(MULTILINE)
Application
Initiate one spiritual conversation this week. Invite someone to church, a group, or a one-on-one Bible reading.
Closing Encouragement
The same Father who revealed Christ to Peter is still revealing His Son today. The same Jesus who declared Himself the Rock is still building His church. The same Savior who said it was necessary to suffer has already conquered death and secured eternal life for all who believe.
You are not saved by effort. You are not sustained by performance. You are not commissioned by accident.
You are revealed to, redeemed by, and built upon Jesus Christ—the Son of the living God.
And He is not finished building.
