Nicodemus was impressed with the miracles/signs/wonders Jesus had done, so in order to protect his reputation amongst other religious leaders he comes to Jesus at night, for a discussion about theology. Jesus turns the tables, from this being a casual conversation about religion, to an evangelistic confrontation about the kingdom. Notice from the text what God does to get us into His Kingdom, and how we can experience eternal life.
