Onward: Launching Into a New Year January 25th, 2026

Sent on Mission

Luke 10:11–12

‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

A communication of urgency!!

We are sent with a message, for ALL to hear.

Luke 10:11 — “…Yet know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.”

    • Jesus doesn’t tell the disciples to win arguments or build a personal brand. He gives them one central announcement:
    • Christian mission is not mainly “be nice” or “do good things”. It is proclamation:
    • A sober reality for our moment: mission isn’t an optional “church program

“Mission… is not a ‘fringe activity’… the whole Church is on mission and cannot be otherwise.”

  • As you step into this new year, don’t just set goals—embrace your calling. Wherever God places you (home, workplace, neighborhood), your basic mission is the same:
    • The GOSPEL IS CONFRONTATIONAL!
    • Start your day with a simple prayer: “Lord, send me today.”
    • Look for one natural moment to say something explicit about Jesus (not just church).

We are sent with urgency, even when we’re rejected

Luke 10:11 — “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you…” That “dust” action is not petty. It’s prophetic. Jesus is teaching two things at once:

    • Freedom: You are not responsible for controlling outcomes.
    • Faithfulness: You are responsible to testify clearly.

So when a town rejects them, they don’t retaliate, sulk, or obsess. They witness and move forward—because there are other towns, other people, and the mission is bigger than one response.

And notice: even in rejection, they still say the same line:

“Yet know this—the kingdom of God has come near.”

This is huge for evangelism fatigue. Some of you stopped speaking because you were dismissed, mocked, or ignored. Jesus is telling you:

“There are no passive spectators, only engaged participants… acting out what is in Christ.”

******SO WHAT******

    • Have you stopped sharing the gospel with someone who just keeps rejecting?
    • Re-engage with prayer, humility, and clarity—no pressure tactics, no shame, just truth and love.

We are sent under the shadow of eternity

Luke 10:12 — “…it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.”

Jesus brings in “that day”—the day of judgment. He’s not being harsh; He’s being honest. The Kingdom coming near is good news—but rejecting the King is not neutral.

Jude 1:20-23

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment[a] stained by the flesh.

This does two things to a church launching into a new year:

  1. It sobers us: mission is not a hobby; it’s rescue.
  2. It steadies us: rejection isn’t ultimately rejection of you—it’s rejection of Christ.

This urgency should never produce arrogance; it should produce compassion, patience, and courage.

And it should push us into the whole-life witness of the Kingdom—truth and mercy together:

“Peacemaking… can be evangelistic… we show the world the kind of king and kingdom we represent.”

**If eternity is real, then “later” is a dangerous word. As a church, we don’t coast into a new year—we go.

LETS GO WITH THE GOSPEL!
