The Privilege of Prayer

Luke 11:1–13

Key Idea

  • Prayer is a privilege, not a burden
  • The privilege of prayer is rooted in who God is, our ability to come to Him, and His generosity

1. Jesus Modeled a Life of Prayer

  • Luke 11:1 — “Jesus was praying…”
  • Prayer was not occasional for Jesus — it was essential
  • If Jesus depended on prayer, so should we

Prayer is not about eloquence, but dependence.

2. Prayer Begins with Commitment

  • Jesus says, “When you pray”, not if
  • Prayer is not a last resort — it is a daily rhythm
  • Commitment matters more than perfection

“Our reliance on prayer must be a when, not an if.”

3. Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray (Luke 11:2–4)

A model, not a script:

  • Adoration & Submission
“Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.”
  • Dependence
“Give us each day our daily bread.”
  • Confession & Forgiveness
    “Forgive us our sins…”
  • Protection
    “Lead us not into temptation.”

4. Why Prayer Is a Privilege Because of Who God Is (Luke 11:2-4)

1. God is Our Father

God is near, loving, and involved

2. God is Holy

Set apart, worthy of reverence

3. God is King

Loving Father, reigning Lord

4. God is Our Provider

He cares about our daily needs

5. God is Our Forgiver

Forgiveness made possible through Christ (1 John 1:9)

6. God is Our Protector

We need His strength against temptation and the enemy

5. Boldness in Prayer is a Privilege (Luke 11:5–10)

  • The friend at midnight shows shameless persistence
  • Ask. Seek. Knock. — Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking
  • Hebrews 4:16 — We approach God with confidence

God is not annoyed by your prayers — He invites them.

6. Prayer is a Privilege Because of the Good Gifts that God Gives

(Luke 11:11–13)

  • God does not give harm when we ask for help
  • Even imperfect parents give good gifts
  • How much more will our Heavenly Father?
  • The greatest gift He gives: the Holy Spirit

Final Takeaway

  • Prayer is a privilege because of who God is
  • Prayer is a privilege because of our ability to speak to Him boldly, and his desire to hear from you
  • Prayer is a privilege because of God’s desire to give you His Holy Spirit
