WHY CHRISTMAS MATTERS

Luke 2:1-15

INTRODUCTION:

Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

John 8:12 (NIV) that Jesus declared of Himself: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Luke 2:10-11 (NIV) “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

Jesus gave us things we are to do;

1.     . Luke 22:19-20 (NIV)“…take and eat …do this in remembrance of me…”

2.     .  Luke 3:3 (NIV)“…repent and baptized …everyone of you.”

TEXT:

Luke 2:1-15 (NIV) In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.2 (This was the first census that took place whileQuirinius was governor of Syria.)3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

THREE QUESTIONS:

1. WHY IS CHRISTMAS SO ?

Colossians 1:15-16 (LB)Jesus Christ is the exact likeness of the unseen God.  He existed before God made anything at all.  In fact, Christ Himself is the creator who made everything.

Psalms 139:13 (NIV)You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Philippians 2:7 (AMP)“He became like men and was born a human being.”

2. WHY DID GOD SEND ?

Jesus came to earth for four reasons:

·        To show us what .

·        To show us how to .

John 10:10 (NIV)“I have come that you might live life to the fullest.”

·        To show us that we can .

·        To show us .

1 John 3:5 (LB) “He became a man so that He could take away our sins.”

Philippians 2:6-8 (NLT)Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.  Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,he humbled himself in obedience to God and died .

1 John 4:9-10 (NLT)“God showed how much He loves us by sending His only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him.  This is real love, that God sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.”

John 15:13 (NIV)“Greater love has no man than this than a man lay down his life for his friends.”

3. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES MAKE?

Romans 5:10-11 (NLT)For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.  So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

God’s gift is;

·        Personal

·        Practical

·        Priceless

·        Permanent

CONCLUSION:

Psalm 70:4 (LB)“Let those who love Your salvation exclaim, What a wonderful God He is!”

Romans 10:9 (NLT)If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Three things to making Jesus Lord of your life:

1.    Admit that He is God.

2.  Believe that He loves me…

3.  Commit the rest of my life to following His plan…
