The Purpose of the Storm
(Matthew 14:22-26) Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
1. He is with you
We focus on getting TO the destination, When God is developing us through the journey All throughout the Bible God’s people had to “go through” in order to get “TO”:
- Israel goes THROUGH the read sea →TO freedom
- Israel goes THROUGH the wilderness → TO the promised land
- Joseph goes THROUGH betrayal, slavery, and prison → TO the palace
- The disciples go THROUGH the storm → TO see Jesus’ power revealed When you are going through the storm: Even when you can’t see Him, He can see you
(Psalm 46:1) God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2. Don’t allow to affect your
(1 John 4:18) There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.
In the storm we tend to live on one of two foundations:
- God loves me and He is with me
- God has forsaken me and He is punishing me
3. in the storm
(Matthew 14:27) But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.
(Isaiah 26:3) You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
(John 14:1) Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
4. in the storm
(Matthew 14:28-29) “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
5. He will in the storm
(Matthew 14:30-32) But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
How do we step out in a storm?
- Trust God’s word
- Get your feet wet
- Remember the miracles of the past
