Do you Love me?
November 23, 2025 / Oasis Community ChurchQuestions Jesus Asked — “Do You Love Me?”
“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” —John 21:15–17
It’s a question so simple… yet it cuts so deep. And He didn’t ask it once. He asked three times.
Why?
John 21:15–17 (NKJV) 15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him,“Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.”
NIV 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
Matt 9:36 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Joihn 10: 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
He is not trying to get something from you, He is trying to grow something in you.
15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (agapao) Me more than these?” Agape
This is divine, sacrificial, unconditional love.
The highest kind—love that gives without expecting anything in return
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love ( phileo) You.” This is friendship love, affection, the love of relationship and warmth
16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (agapao) Me?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love (Phileo) You.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (phileo) Me?”
Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him,
“Lord, You know all things; You know that I love (phileo) You.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.”
It’s as if Jesus is saying:
“Peter, I’ll meet you at your level. Just be honest with Me.”
JESUS ASKS QUESTIONS TO RESTORE, NOT TO CONDEMN

THE QUESTION “DO YOU LOVE ME?” REVEALS OUR HEARTS
This is why Jesus’ instruction after every “Do you love Me?” wasn’t a hug—it was a mission:
Because love for Jesus isn’t measured in sentiment…
…it’s measured in focused service.
We have been made for mission. (growth track)
Love for Jesus always leads you toward people—not away from them.
One of the best ways to renew you purpose is to start serving others.
15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”
This question exposes:
- our loyalties (who gets my best)
- our priorities (who gets my first)
- our idols (who gets my heart)
- our willingness to obey (who gets my service) Click to add your own note
JESUS’ QUESTION IS REALLY A CALL TO SACRIFICE
“Do you love Me?”
Because if you love Him—
you’ll follow Him,
you’ll obey Him,
you’ll serve Him,
you’ll feed His sheep,
you’ll lay your life down for Him.
JESUS MEETS YOU WHERE YOU ARE BUT WON’T LEAVE YOU THERE
1 John 4:19 “We love Him because He first loved us.”
Our love is always a response.
Mark 12:30 “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.”
Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
He agaped us first.
Love always Empowers us to sacrifice.
Do you love Him more than:
- your comfort
- your habits
- your sin
- your pride
- your schedule
- your preferences
Do you love Him enough to:
- forgive someone who hurt you
- give sacrificially
- serve anonymously
- obey immediately
- follow courageously
- repent humbly
- love radically
Love for Jesus is not proven by emotion but by action.
Love is not something you feel for Jesus; Love is something you do for Jesus.
It’s obedience in action
