Daily Dependence: The God Who Provides Again Tomorrow
Matthew 6:11
“Give us today our daily bread.”
- I want to talk to you today about
- Daily Dependence: The God Who Provides Again Tomorrow
PRAY!
Intro: “We Think We Are the Providers”
- Let me ask you a question
- Where do you think your bread comes from?
- Now,
- I know what we’d say.
- We’d say, “God provides.”
- And we’d say that
- Because we believe it… And
- Because it’s the right answer.
But practically — here is what we often think?
- My job provides.
- My paycheck provides.
- My planning provides.
- My wisdom provides.
- My hustle provides.
- My security provides.
- We think that if we budget carefully,
- Work hard,
- Plan smart,
- Save wisely,
- And show up every day,
- Then we are the ones who make life work.
- But Jesus breaks through all of that with one simple line:
“Give us today our daily bread.”
- This is the part of the Lord’s Prayer
- Where Jesus confronts us.
- He takes every illusion of self-sufficiency,
- Every myth of independence,
- Every whisper that
- “I’m doing this on my own,” and
- He gently but decisively corrects it….
- Provision does not begin with us.
- It begins with “Give…”
- It begins with an Ask
Spurgeon said it beautifully:
“We have no storehouse but our Father’s storehouse.”
- And this is exactly what makes Week 4 of SEEK 2026 so important.
- Before Jesus wants to talk about generosity…
- He talks about dependence.
- Before God asks us to give…
- He asks us to trust.
- Before we step out in faith…
- We must see
- That He is the One who provides again for today
- And he will do it all over again tomorrow.
- So with that in mind
- Here is the SEEK 2026 step of faith we are taking as a church family.
- Just one week away
- And listen — don’t see these numbers as a budget.
- See them as daily bread opportunities…
- Moments where God teaches us
- To trust Him again tomorrow by what we release today.
Here is how we believe God will provide through His people next week: (Eating our Elephant)
- 1 person or 1 family giving $10,000
- 2 people or 2 families giving $5,000 each
- 2 people or 2 families giving $2,500 each
- 5 people or 5 families giving $1,000 each
- 8 people or 8 families giving $500 each
- 10 people or 10 families giving $250 each
That totals $36,500 — but hear me:
- This is not just a number
- This is discipleship.
- This is trust.
- This is mission.
- This is dependence.
“Daily dependence means this: I do not give because I have extra — I give because I trust God to provide again tomorrow.”
- So, SEEK 2026 is not about equal gifts — it’s about equal trust.
- It’s each of us
- Offering the daily bread
- God has placed in our hands,
- Believing He will put more in those hands tomorrow.
With that posture — let’s open the text.
Matthew 6:11
“Give us today our daily bread.”
- Jesus gives us eight short words
- But within them they are spiritually rich
- This single verse contains
- A whole theology of provision,
- A whole posture of discipleship,
- And a whole philosophy for how God forms His people.
Let’s work phrase by phrase.
1. “Give” — Provision Begins With God
– Jesus could have chosen any verb.
– He could have said:
- Bless
- Strengthen
- Support
- Affirm
- Sustain
- Reward
- But He chooses
- The most dependent word in the language:
- Give.
- The Greek is an imperative of request. (a Command)
- Which means
- A humble command from a dependent heart.
To pray “give” is to confess:
- I cannot provide for myself.
- I cannot sustain myself.
- I cannot ensure the next breath or meal.
- I cannot guarantee strength for today.
- I cannot control outcomes.
The prayer assumes God is the Provider — not us.
Spurgeon said:
“If the Lord gave us all we needed for the next ten years, we would not know how to carry the burden of the blessing. So He gives by the day as we are able to receive.”
Daily bread is God’s mercy guarding us from independence.
2. “Us” — Provision Is Communal, Not Individual
– Jesus does not allow us to pray selfishly.
– The Christian life is not “me and God.”
– It is “us and God.”
“Give us today our daily bread.”
- Provision is a community prayer.
- Why?
- Because God intends
- His people to depend together,
- Give together, and
- Receive together.
- What God provides for me may flow to you.
- What God provides for you may sustain someone else.
- And what God provides for all of us becomes ministry.
- This is why SEEK 2026 is a family journey
- Not an individual fundraiser.
When Jesus says “us,” He is making the point that:
- Provision is meant to be shared.
- God gives to His people so His people can give to others.
3. “Today” — God Provides for the Day You Are In, Not the One You Fear
– Jesus intentionally limits the timeframe:
– Not “give us this month”
– Not “give us the year’s supply”
– Not “give us enough so we never have to pray this again”
He says:
“Give us today…”
The Greek means “this very day, this present moment.”
Jesus is teaching:
- God gives what is needed for today.
- You cannot access tomorrow’s grace today.
- You are not meant to live in tomorrow’s pressures today.
- You cannot solve tomorrow.
- Because God has not provisioned tomorrow yet.
- This is why worry over tomorrow wrecks peace today.
- You are trying to live in a day God has not yet supplied.
- (PAUSE)
- That’s what Jesus means when He says just a few verses later:
“Do not worry about tomorrow…” (Matt. 6:34)
- Because God will provide tomorrow’s bread tomorrow.
“Give us today our…Daily”
4. “Daily” — God Designs Provision to Draw Us Back to Him
– The most unusual word in the entire Lord’s Prayer is “daily.”
Greek:
- A word so rare it appears only here
- And in Luke’s version of the prayer.
What it is believed to mean is:
- adequate
- necessary
- enough
- essential
- what is required for existence
Meaning:
God gives enough for today so He can give again tomorrow.
- Daily dependence keeps the relationship alive.
- Daily need creates daily nearness.
- It is not God limiting us
- It’s God inviting us.
“Give us today our Daily…Bread”
5. “Bread” — Everything Necessary for Life and Godliness
Bread in Jesus’ day meant “all that is essential for life.”
Bread represented:
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
- Work
- Wisdom
- Strength
- Courage
- Patience
- Provision
- Mental clarity
- Emotional capacity
- Physical ability
- Health
- Peace
- Bread is shorthand for
- Whatever you must have to live faithfully today.
- So when we pray for daily bread, we are praying:
“God, give me whatever I need to obey You today.”
Not luxury.
Not abundance.
Not convenience.
Not self-sufficiency.
Daily bread is the Father saying:
“I will give you what you need — and I will meet you again tomorrow.”
What Daily Dependence Reveals in Us
- Matthew 6:11 does not just teach us how to pray.
- It reveals what is happening inside our hearts.
- Let’s look at this dependence for a moment
1. Dependence reveals our idols
“My job provides.”
“My savings provide.”
“My skills provide.”
“My planning provides.”
“My discipline provides.”
“My hustle provides.”
No — Jesus says:
“Give…”
Meaning:
– You are not the source.
– Your job is not the source.
– Your plans are not the source.
– Your wisdom is not the source.
– Your budget is not the source.
God is.
Daily dependence reveals who you really think provides.
2. Dependence exposes our anxiety
Spurgeon said:
“Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow,
but only empties today of its strength.”
- Worry is what happens when we try to live in a day God has not supplied.
- Daily dependence brings peace because it keeps us in the day God has resourced.
3. Dependence crushes pride
Daily dependence reminds us:
- We are not in control.
- We are not self-reliant.
- We are not the center.
- We are not the provider.
Daily bread is a daily humbling.
It whispers:
“You need Him again.”
“You need Him still.”
“You need Him today.”
4. Dependence deepens intimacy with God
– If God gave you everything for the next 10 years today…
– Would you pray tomorrow?
– Would you feel needy tomorrow?
– Would you seek Him tomorrow?
Any body can be good when the bank account is full
- Dependence is God drawing us closer.
- Dependence is God keeping us in relationship.
- Dependence is God saying, “Come to Me again.”
How We Live Matthew 6:11
Jesus intends for this prayer to form our daily lifestyle.
1. Pray Matthew 6:11 literally every morning
Wake up and pray:
“Father, give me today what I need to obey You.”
- Strength for today
- Wisdom for today
- Provision for today
- Grace for today
- Focus for today
- Peace for today
Begin each day dependent — not confident, not self-sufficient.
2. Give because God will provide again tomorrow (SEEK 2026)
– This is the heart of SEEK 2026.
– We do not give from abundance.
– We give from dependence.
– We give not because we can see the future,
– But because we trust the One who holds the future.
– SEEK is not about what we have.
– It’s about who He is.
– It’s about daily bread — and daily trust.
– Your generosity is not a financial decision
– It is a discipleship decision.
3. Release tomorrow
– Let God be the One who holds tomorrow’s details.
– Do not try to live in a day that God has not yet resourced.
– You have grace for today — and that is enough.
4. Rest in God’s rhythm (work → depend → trust → rest)
– This is the healthy rhythm God built into the world.
– You work, you trust, you pray, you rest — and God provides.
– You do not carry tomorrow.
– He does.
GOSPEL CONCLUSION – Jesus Is the Bread We Need
- Jesus does not merely teach us to pray for daily bread
- He declares Himself to be the daily bread.
John 6:35:
“I am the bread of life.”
- He is the One who satisfies the soul.
- He is the One who sustains our life.
- He is the One who gives us what nothing else can.
- Jesus lived daily dependent on the Father
“I can do nothing on my own” (John 5:19)
- So that through His obedience,
- God could provide us with eternal grace.
- He is the Bread broken for our salvation.
- He is the Bread shared so we can live.
- He is the Provider and the Provision.
Everything we need — today and tomorrow — flows from Him.
- Guided Prayer Response time – (todays verse is also found in Luke 11
- When his disciples came to Jesus and they ask him to do something for them
- And I feel compelled to help do the same thing for us
Luke 11:1-3
He was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “Whenever you pray, say, Father, your name be honored as holy.Your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
