THE IN THE ROOM
Today we’re talking about a major in the church world:
Tongues & Prophecy
The Bible doesn’t avoid it — and neither will we.
THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT
The gifts are for today, for the church, and for building up others — not ego.
1. God Commands Us to the Gifts
1 Corinthians 14:1
“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.”
You don’t stumble into spiritual gifts — you seek them.
2. Prophecy People Up
1 Corinthians 14:3
“The one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.”
1 Thessalonians 5:20–21
“Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good.”
Prophetic words should encourage and be tested.
3. Tongues the .
1 Corinthians 14:4
“The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.”
James 3:8
“No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”
Tongues is a humble way to surrender your voice to God.
“It doesn’t make me better than you — it makes me better than me.”
4. There Are Different Kinds of Tongues
- Private: Personal prayer to God
- Public: For the church, must be interpreted
- Sign: Miraculously understood language
1 Corinthians 14:2
“For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 14:27–28
“If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.”
Acts 2:6–8
“And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language… And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?”
5. How Do We Receive?
Ask. Believe. .
Luke 11:13
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
6. What Blocks the Flow?
Fear, pride, unbelief, or .
Ephesians 4:30–31
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God… Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”
James 1:6
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”
God doesn’t force — He partners.
COMMUNION PREP
After the message, we take Communion to remember what Jesus did — and to receive what He paid for.
1 Corinthians 11–14
The early church practiced the Lord’s Supper alongside spiritual gifts.
