  • Roman soldiers had a large wooden shield that was covered with leather.
    • Could be 2.5 feet wide and up to 4 feet tall; could with other shields.
    • Often soaked in water before battle to protect against flaming arrows.

Paul gave important details about the shield of faith, Ephesians 6:16.

  • The other pieces of armor are not enough faith.
  • Taking up the shield of faith is a : will we trust God or not?
  • Our faith can withstand any of Satan.
    • Satan has many weapons: doubt, fear, guilt, shame, anger, hate, confusion.

Hebrews 11:6 helps us understand how to take up the shield of faith.

  • Faith is a foundational part of our spiritual life.
    • We can’t please God without faith: reflected in attitudes of daily life.
    • Faith guides our understanding of God – who He is and what He does.
    • Faith is the means by which God us.
      • He gives assurance, confidence, peace, joy, endurance, wisdom, protection, etc.
  • Abel and Enoch are examples of people who pleased God with their faith, vv. 4-5.
    • Abel’s actions reflected his and reverence for God.
    • Enoch “walked” with God in a daily, obedient , Genesis 5:21-24.
  • Faith only works as a shield of protection when we live it out in daily life.

Jesus is the perfect example of how to use the shield of faith, Matthew 4:1-11.

  • Jesus responded to each of Satan’s attacks with God’s truth from
    • He knew both what Scripture said and how to apply it.
  • Jesus trusted in God the Father for wisdom and strength.
    • He spent extensive time in developing the relationship.
  • Take time to read Matthew 4:1-11 slowly and think about Jesus’ example.
    • How can you grow in your understanding and use of the Bible?
    • How can you grow in your prayer life?
