Shame Is Not My Name
(1 Peter 2:6 ESV) “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’”
“Shame is the heavy feeling that something is wrong with me—because of what I’ve done or what’s happened to me—that makes me want to hide from God and from people.”
It is very important to me to not be perceived by others as…
(Matthew 4:18-20 ESV) While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
(John 18:17-18) The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves.
(John 18:25) Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
(John 18:26-27) One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him? ”Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.
(John 21:3) “Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’
(John 21:4-7) Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat…and you will find some.”So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”
1. Bring Shame Into The
(John 21:7-9) When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea…9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread.
2. Remember who you are in
(John 21:15-17) When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
The only way to heal from shame is to move the focus from what I’m not, to who Christ is.
I am not
Because of Jesus, I am
3. Step Into
(John 21:17) … “Feed my sheep.”
(1 Peter 2:6 ESV) “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’”
