INTRODUCTION:
Storm Theology:
Mark 3:20
TEXT:
Mark 4:35-41(NIV) 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Background:
SIX LESSONS TO LEARN:
1. STORMS ARE A
Mark 4:35 (NIV)That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”
Mark 3:20
Romans 10:17 (NIV)Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
God will always test our faith!
Mark 4:35 (NIV)“Let us go over to the other side.”
Mark 4:38 (NIV)“Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
Mark 4:40 (NIV) “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
J.C. Ryle said, ”It is good to understand that Christ’s service never did secure a man from all the ills that flesh is heir to, and never will. If you are a believer, you must reckon having your share of sickness and pain, of sorrow and tears, of losses and crosses, of deaths and bereavements, of partings and separations, of vexations and disappointments, so long as you are in the body. Christ never undertakes that you shall get to heaven without these. He has undertaken that all who come to Him shall have all things pertaining to life and Godliness; but he has never undertaken that He will make them prosperous, or rich, or healthy, and that death and sorrow shall never come to their family.”
The next lesson to learn is
2.STORMS CAN HAPPEN
Mark 4:37 (NIV)A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
Matthew 8:24 (NIV)Suddenly a furious storm that came up.
Job 14:1 (NIV) [Life is] full of trouble.

3. STORMS CAN CAUSE YOU TO

The next lesson to learn is
4. STORMS TEACH YOU
Mark 4:39 (NIV) He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
Mark 1:25 (NIV) “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him…
Job 1:16 (NIV)While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
Job 1:18-19 (NIV)While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting… 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
If we pay attention, there are a lot of lessons we can about God in the middle of the storm.
Ask not is this happening? But rather; do you want me to learn?
The fifth lesson to learn is
5. STORMS TEACH YOU
Mark 4:40 (NIV)He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
“Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Mark 4:38 (NIV)“Teacher, don’t you care…?”
Fear them from seeing who Jesus really was.
The last lesson to learn is
6. STORMS WILL
Mark 4:41 (NIV) says, They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Psalms 89:8-9 (NIV)Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea;when its waves mount up, you still them.
“Who is this?”
Psalm 107:23–32 (NIV)
23 Some went out on the sea in ships;
they were merchants on the mighty waters.
24 They saw the works of the Lord,
his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
that lifted high the waves.
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;in their peril their courage melted away.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the seawere hushed.
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing loveand his wonderful deeds for mankind.
32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people
and praise him in the council of the elders.
