He Set Me Free

3 counterfeit teachings Paul addressed in Colossians:

Humanism- “you do you” “man is the center, man is the solution” Colossians 2:8

Mysticism– “I need a sign” “there are hidden truths for the spiritual elite” Colossians 2:18

Legalism- “you need to do more” “What Jesus did on the cross wasn’t enough” Colossians 2:16

The Gospel: Jesus + Nothing = EVERYTHING

Legalism: Jesus +______+_______+______= MAYBE

(Colossians 2:13-15) When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

1. He set me free from the

(Colossians 2:13)….God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins

A lie from the enemy starts with “you are a____” (when we agree with the lie) it ends with “ I am a_____”

Common lies:
  • “I’ll never measure up.”
  • “I can’t let anyone see the real me.”
  • “I will always be alone.“
  • “I’m a burden to people.“
  • “I’m failing, just like my dad.“
  • “I’m unqualified.”
  • “I’m not worth anyone’s time.”
  • “I’m nothing special.”
The lies of the enemy want to keep us stuck in fear, shame, and striving.
The Truth of God’s word:
  • “I am more than enough”
  • ”I am accepted”
  • “I’m a part of a family”
  • “I am a blessing to people”
  • ”I have access to grace”
  • “I am qualified”
  • ”Jesus entered into time for my salvation”
  • “I am God’s masterpiece and he has a plan and purpose for me life”

2. He set me free from

(Colossians 2:16-17) Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

We are working from God’s approval, not for God’s approval.

    3. He set me free from striving for

(Colossians 2:18) Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

(Romans 14:1-3) Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.

(Romans 14:12-15) 12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. 13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died

(Romans 14:19) Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
