In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…
– Philippians 2:5 (NIV)
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
– Philippians 2:1-2 (NIV)
In Christ – To be aware of and embrace God’s presence in .
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
– John 15:4-5 NIV
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
– Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NIV
“Prayer without ceasing” – Paul
“Remain in loving attention to God.” – Spanish Monk St. John
“Habitual conscious communion.” – A.W. Tozer
“The with-God life.” – Dallas Willard
“ the of God.” – Brother Lawrence
“When you sit at home” – Let your mind drift to awareness of His presence.
“When you walk along the road” – Pray when you drive
“When you lie down and when you get up” – Start and end your day with Him
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.
– Philippians 2:3-5 NIV

“His Mind In You”
This week we kicked off our new series, “The Mind of Christ.” In Philippians 2:5, the Apostle Paul says: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”
We learned that the Mind of Christ isn’t something to admire from a distance or try to imitate—it’s not a trait to copy, but a Person to become.
Before Paul tells us to have the mind of Christ, he says in Philippians 2:1: “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ” (some translations say “in Christ”).
Paul is talking about being so close to Him—united, remaining in Him (John 15)—that it transforms our thoughts and actions. The key to the mind of Christ is not emulation, but immersion.
This week, I encourage you to follow the advice of a 17th-century monastery dishwasher named Brother Lawrence and practice the presence of God—to think about Him and spend time with Him in your everyday life.
- Read Philippians 2:1-5. What stands out to you from the text or from the message?
- How did “practicing the presence of God” go this week? This is a judgement free zone; share victories and failures, what worked, what didn’t work, when you remembered and when you forgot.
- What will you do this week to practice being “in Christ”?
- Read Philippians 2:6-8. Here Paul tells us what the Mind of Christ is and did for you and me. (If it’s confusing, try reading the NLT). What is a defining characteristic of the Mind of Christ in these passages?
- What do you hope to gain from this series?
