Dad’s Toolbox: Building a Legacy That Lasts
David Quaid

I. Intro

Deuteronomy 6:4–7 (NIV) 4Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

II. Three Essential Tools for Building a Godly Legacy

A. A Father’s

1. Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

2. 1 John 4:15-19 (NIV) 15If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19We love because he first loved us.

3. Our families don’t need a ; but they do need a .

B. A Father’s

1. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV) 6These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

2. Proverbs 18:21a (NIV) The tongue has the power of life and death….

3. Matthew 3:16-17 (NIV) 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

C. A Father’s

1. Deuteronomy 6:7 (NIV) Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

2. Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV) ”Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

3. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you….

4. Matthew 1:23b (NIV) …”and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

5. Matthew 28:18b-20 (NIV) 18b”All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

III. Conclusion

A legacy isn’t built . It’s built with , one at a time.
