When Emotions Attack

(Jonah 3:10) When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

(Jonah 4:1) But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry.

(Jonah 4:2-3) He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

1. When emotions attack, what God has done

(Psalm 103:2-5) Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me. 3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. 4 He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. 5 He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

What God has done for us:

1. He forgives all my sins
2. He heals all my diseases
3. He redeems me from death
4. He crowns me with love and mercy
5. He fills me life with good things

(Jonah 4:4-8) 4 But the LORD replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5 Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

2. When emotions attack, remember they are

4 times when you should refrain from making a decision:

H-hungry

A-angry

L-lonely

T-tired

(Galatians 5:22-23) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

(Galatians 5:24-25) Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Root Issues in Jonah’s story:

1. Bitterness and Unforgiveness

“Justice looks like destruction, not mercy.”

2. Emotional Immaturity

“If things don’t go my way, I spiral.”

3. Control

“I’ll obey if it makes sense to me.”

3. When emotions attack, remember we have a

(Jonah 4:9-11) But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.” But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

(Mark 16:15) He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

(Romans 6:4) For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
