THE SOWER, THE SEED AND THE SOILS

Parables – Life Lessons From Jesus – Part 1

Rick Beachy 6/1/2025

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around Him was so large that He got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. He taught them many things by parables, and in His teaching said: “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, it was trampled on, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no moisture or root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times more than was sown.” Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” -Mark 4:1-9 NIV (Luke 8)

“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: The seed is the Word of God. The farmer sows the Word. When anyone hears the message about the Kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one, the devil, comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved. This is the seed sown along the path.   The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the Word and at once receives it with joy.   But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes, or a time of testing, because of the Word, they quickly fall away.   The seed falling among the thorns refers to those who hear the Word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth and the desire for other things choke the Word, making it unfruitful, and they do not mature. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone with a noble and good heart, who hears the Word, understands it, and retains it, and by persevering produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” -Matthew 13:18-23 NIV (Luke 8, Mark 4)
